Universities pay copyright fees. Libraries pay copyright fees. Theaters pay to perform copyrighted work. Artists and authors pay licence fees to quote others in their own work, usually out of pocket.

And yet those who will never promote the use of AI in historical research canβt secure funding for their projects π« the projected landscape of historical research is filling me with existential dread
I just can't get over what a bullshit thievery based scam all this is and there are still actual academics doing tra la la think pieces about how we need to embrace it or be left behind, I mean, look at the state of it. Look at it. It is bad, wrong, offensive, stupid and scuzzy.
In case the scam here isn't obvious - Grammarly is, without permission, creating little LLM agents based on the work of academics and then claiming this is the same as their "expert opinion" - using their names and reputations for free without consent.
Incredible that Trump's just dunked on Starmer for taking too long to fold. Starmer's managed to deliver his personal specialty: an outcome where he's pissed off literally everyone for zero gain.
This is one of the most frustrating things about taking a terf stance (not merely a transphobic one): the myopic inability to recognise that bodily autonomy and legal protection benefits EVERYONE and conversely, reducing those for 1 group also impacts on ones you personally care about
We also donβt use βpattyβ much for meat and the word in that context makes me so so queasy. NO PATTIES.
It's the whole "Moving to a literal slave-society that enforces conditions on its working population you would be appalled to have forced on you, laughing about dodging them, & criticising other countries for being decadently democratic" thing that gets people riled-up.
I'm really pleased to see 'Finding and leaving traces: Prehabitation and the presence of the past in the Victorian-era prison' - co-written with Dominique Moran and Jennifer Turner - is now out in @jofhistgeog.bsky.social

It took me ages (as a PhD) to work out who was a Professor and who was an Associate Professor and therefore Dr.
The short is Ass Prof. π
By can't I literally mean, can not, legally, do this. I also mean morally it's wrong. We all get to experience the dystopian realities of this system together folks.
Yes. we can't enshrine privileged access to any constituency here including those starting out, much as it might seem fair to do so. This just highlights how busted the entire system is now. Strong incentives to do PhD or supervise remain (pipeline), yet jobs almost vanished, plus many redundancies.
I love when cats are like, see? SEE? * jumps in a circle * SEE??
Raises some important issues but also ignores the fact that many Humanities staff outside the magic circle are facing redundancy. They are naturally willing, indeed desperate, to apply for entry-level Oxbridge posts. The situation is grim. 1/2
"As shown in the most recent annual report, the universityβs finances are strong and healthy.
"The level of cuts management continue to propose are neither needed nor can they be carried out without substantially damaging education and research". (Claire Duncanson, UCU) 2/2
'Members of the University and College Union (UCU) at the University of Edinburgh are to begin strike action following management's plans for Β£140 million in cuts and up to 1,800 job losses.' 1/2
This needs to be condemned, not amplified in the responsible media. It is racist, MAGA-inspired, far right propaganda. People in Gorton & Denton voted for a range of reasons. Many Muslims voted as members of a disillusioned working class & *most* white constituents voted against Reformβs bigotry.

I mean I hope you keep a lil bottle on you yourself for emergencies
Can anyone recommend work on women and children in Royal Engineers or other military/navy families who ended up living overseas? Particularly Bermuda??
I mean a sane labour would be happy with a green victory as protecting the country.
guys, these are the people youβre supposed to be *winning back to Labour*, I donβt think saying βoh theyβre all either rubes or reactionariesβ is a great play
Genuinely shocked to read about proposals at Galway (an amazing university with world-class humanities departments) to axe the broad-based arts degree. Really grim reading. www.irishtimes.com/ireland/educ...
