In the years since I have traveled back often and have many cherished memories with my family. But now, like many Canadians, I'm hurt and I'm angry. I never thought I would see someone succeed at shattering that image of America so forcefully. And yet, here we are.
I lived in California for a few years after high school, and I arrived in the days after 9/11. What I saw then was a country and people who were deeply wounded, but pulled together in ways I wasn't always used to seeing in Canada. It was inspiring and remained a key part of how I viewed the USA.
Canada faces revolutionary change. It may sound staid, but we urgently need something on the scale of a Royal Commission to *finally* figure out our options and choices.
Right now we’re not so much acting as reacting, casting about, not fully understanding where we are and what we’re doing. 🧵
