At last year's Fastmarkets Middle East Iron & Steel Conference, Meranti Green Steel announced signing offtake term sheets covering the 2.5 Mtpa of planned capacity for transportable HBI from its future DR plant in Duqm, Oman, with an additional doubling of offtake envisaged for a possible 2nd phase.

Yesterday, Urgewald released the MetCoal Exit List (MCEL) 2.0, a follow-up to last year’s edition.
The update identifies 145 companies with 273 expansion projects planned in 20 different countries, which could potentially add up to 580 million tonnes of new #MetCoal.

Mighty Earth’s new report, Driven by Dirty Steel, reveals which automakers in the USA market continue to rely on steel produced using coal-based blast furnaces, and the serious health risks to communities associated with it.
More than three years into the project timeline, there has been little to no progress on the ground, no revised project plan or no credible timeline.

The joint press release highlights that ArcelorMittal Dofasco committed in 2022 to transition away from coal-based steelmaking to Direct Reduction of Iron (DRI) technology by 2028, pledging to cut emissions by more than 60%.
Environmental Defence Canada, Environment Hamilton and SteelWatch are calling on ArcelorMittal Dofasco, the owner of Canada’s largest steel mill, to provide clarity and accountability after years of delays to its flagship decarbonisation project in Hamilton, Ontario.

We see positive steps included in this mapping: green-hydrogen based direct reduced iron, green hydrogen plants, electric smelting furnaces that help in using low-grade ore in DRI-EAF; development of green iron hubs that can drive low-emissions iron production where renewables are more abundant.
A decarbonised iron and steel industry — where iron is made with renewable energy and green hydrogen and not coal — will only happen if mining companies step up through sustained investment and development.
Steelmakers’ approaches are highly diverse, with significant effort going into still-unproven solutions like CCS, BioIron & hydrogen injection. While their historical role in accelerating emissions linked to global climate change is undeniable, the role they’ll play going forward is critical.
