With respect to the differences between video game RPGs and TTRPGS, combat encounters are at their best when they allow the players to experience something, instead of being fodder to grind levels, and the former should be the primary motive for having them, esp in the TTRPG medium.

After playing a couple of one shots, I’m wondering what’s special about a system where you roll under?
That’s the point. It exists to get your opponent to waste resources or scout out what moves they’re likely to use and experience little consequence in the process. I frankly find it too over centralizing of a move that makes other defensive maneuvers pointless to use over it.
New Pokemon starters look alright. I think their final evos will probably shine better in the design department though.

Maybe I should add here that housing ownership is kinda illusionary. Sure you can “own” a home but you still got to meet regular payments and comply with stupid OSHA standards otherwise you get kicked out and your property repossessed. I feel like that posters logic falls flat in that regard.

I feel like it’s an issue with popular perception in that case. Even as they do try to streamline themselves, fighting games still have to work against the general perception of them being unapproachable for anyone looking for a casual experience.
I’m a millennial and I’ve always sucked at fighters, but coincidentally I was enamored by Super Smash Bros, precisely because it plays more like a platformer than a fighting game. I’m saying that your point stands, here. Lack of skill transferability is what’s causing the genre to become more niche
