The reason people joke about bassists being pointless is because people don't consciously hear the bass, and thus come to the conclusion that it isn't there. Oftentimes, bass parts get mistaken for guitar (my sister was shocked to learn John Deacon's iconic bassline on Pressure was in fact bass).

A piano can't replicate slides, hammer-ons, pull-offs, harmonics, ghost notes, slaps, pops, or fingerclack. Basically, it can't replicate anything you'd get out of a bassist who's been doing it longer than a week. It absolutely is *not* a substitute.

I think that's an absolutely disgusting misunderstanding of the role bass plays in an arrangement. Yeah sure you can substitute a dogshit bassist with a guitarist and an octave pedal, but you can substitute a dogshit drummer or pianist with a sample pack downloaded off the Internet.

A few things I've learnt from writing >4,000 word pieces:

- They tend to be more popular than my short pieces!
- They're more definitive - like reference material, not a hot take.
- Not everyone will reach the end, and that's okay.
- Write so that the people who do find it incredibly satisfying.

But I don't wanna get better at piano, I wanna get better at bass.

Skill issue, just engage in best practices and remain vigilant.

I'd argue classical guitar and bass are at a similar level of complexity, since you have to simultaneously fret with one hand while also plucking with *at least* two fingers on the other, as well as muting.

We're in a very healthy political environment where everything is accused of being either a secret plot by far-right billionaire tech oligarchs or by the CCP. I'm lucky enough to regularly get accused of both.

As I said the other day, renewables are energy security. Nothing else is.

so the world's energy mix looks like this. around 20%-25% of the world's oil (7%pt of total energy) and a third of the world's gas (another 7%pt) goes thru hormuz.

right now that's been zero'd out, and there's no clear path back. a sixth of the world's energy supply is just... gone.

I like the nuclear block broadly speaking, but I would like it if I was at least shown with a quote post whether it's someone I blocked, someone OP blocked, someone who blocked me, or someone who blocked OP. Getting confused about that is just kinda weird.

I would like to be present when government lawyers tell a 78-year-old judge β€œwe can’t follow your order because the computer won’t let us.” That’s always fun.

the thing about this is that it would make a huge chunk of New Yorkers who consider free curb space to store their cars to be an inalienable right absolutely nuclear-level lose their shit, but also that group of people voted 95% for cuomo or sliwa anyway

On the one hand yes on the other hand I am so grateful for these people doing what they're doing (regardless of the reason why) because IMHO it is very important for this footage to exist for purposes of posterity.

Fun fact- the overwhelming majority of people executed by guillotine during the French Revolution and Reign of Terror were French peasants who were killed *en masse* as a result of political power-plays between factions of the Revolutionary Government.

This story is pretty incredible. But it shows how many people find social utility in the "I am forced to use AI" and "AI is stupid" Nexus. This is, for some folks, a load bearing pair of narratives that can save their job by masking their decision making.

Calls to abolish the emperor are absurd. A society without a divinely appointed ruler is impossible. We should just reform it to limit the harm! More empresses regnant of colour!

I feel like every other day there's a new *thing* in the atmosphere. The academic publishing world is, by all accounts, pretty broken. Chive feels genuinely exciting, with all sorts of amazing possibilities opened up by atproto.
