Wondering whether economic growth helps achieve the world I long for: free of poverty, catastrophic risks, animal oppression & spiritual emptiness. Researcher in ethics (@unifr), board member (Christians for Impact) and father. https://bit.ly/DR-Website
Please, growth fans & degrowth fans!
Give me your best arguments against the "as well" in this claim: "Yes, growth promotes innovation - but growth per se might *as well* promote innovation in dirty tech as in clean tech"
PS: Readings/links help, too

Next Tuesday (20 May) in Fribourg: Talk on AI Ethics. Everyone welcome!
Was hilft denn dem Klima *wirklich*?
Der "Christians For Impact" Report von Shilpita und mir ist jetzt auch auf deutsch verfügbar.
Der grüne Mainstream verpasst m.E. einige wichtige Tipps. Wir versuchen sie fundiert auf den Punkt zu bringen.

oh, ganz herzlichen Dank!
What saved the sperm whales? Some say new technology (fossil fuels), others say government regulation.
Helpful stance & overview of the debate!

Thank you, @focusmate.bsky.social, for making my life so much better over the past years! #5000sessions
Sober, but well-argued and helpful...
An ASI future is hard to plan for now. But: if we do ever plan for it, it will be during an AGI time -- and we can work now towards giving *this* time a political environment that is conducive to sound choices.

PS: And these efforts come naturally to me. They're not deliberate or motivated by theoretical commitments -- I assume this comes intuitively to most parents?
It's mindboggling to become a father as a political philosopher: I find myself trying so hard to replace my kids' deontological takes with a focus on the common good (in particular: exorcising their radical egalitarianism for the sake of smth like @rychappell.bsky.social's beneficentrism).
Gesucht: Schweizer Schienennetz inkl. Kantonsgrenzen.

2-year old son: "The scooter is hurt"
Me: "A scooter can't be hurt -- I think"
Wait what -- did I just add "I think"?!
I must've been brainwashed too hard by all these plant sentience, digital minds, consciousness-emerging-out-of-complexity discussions etc.
n this note, a fitting two paragraphs by Nate Silver:

It's astonishing that the chair (one of the top three AI researchers) felt the need to precede this report by an update -- less than two months (!!) after the end of the writing period. Too much has happened in the meantime.
🙏🙏🙏
Great way to put it
I agree!
Though it just feels odd to tell people "this is so big, this is so urgent" and then have hardly any tangible steps on offer which ppl could take
[AI catastrophic risk explainer for normal people]
Which short explainer currently most compellingly makes the case for taking AI safety very seriously?
(PS: Optimally, the explainer would add 2-3 ideas for action steps that normal people can take if they become convinced)
"May God continue to shed his grace on the United States of America"

That's the kind of male energy I'd like to see in the world
“If I could, I would write every single name on my body. But there are 805 million people suffering from hunger in the world today ... So whenever you hear my name, you will think of their names. Whenever you see me, you will see them.”

Interview with Jack & me below
Climate activist @luisaneubauer.bsky.social said: "I don’t think it’s a particularly radical demand to ask governments to keep their promises" ---> In our article, we ask whether it's *really* such a big issue if govrnments do less (or more!) than they said they would
Thanks for the valuable pointer (including your assessment).
And yes, it really is a challenge to find criticisms that really "get" EA (and also criticisms that aren't so -- in my view -- obviously off the mark that it's hard to engage with them)
Thanks!
Thanks for this, Tristan -- very helpful
