TORONTO, ON — Wardrobe workers at Young People’s Theatre (YPT) have voted unanimously to join IATSE Local 822, strengthening worker representation across one of Canada’s most respected theatre institutions. The certification covers both shop and running wardrobe classifications, bringing near-complete IATSE representation to the venue. Nine workers were eligible to vote. Eight votes were counted and one was segregated (as possibly ineligible), with all counted votes favouring joining the union. The group includes part-time dressers, running crew, and wardrobe production staff such as stitchers and cutters. The status of the Head of Department remains under review. These workers primarily joined together to seek higher wages and stronger job protections. Young People’s Theatre holds a significant place in Toronto’s cultural landscape. As the oldest professional theatre company in Canada dedicated to children and youth, YPT has introduced generations of young audiences to the performing arts. It has put on well-known productions including Hana’s Suitcase, James and the Giant Peach, Seussical, The Adventures of Pinocchio, A Christmas Carol, and more. Business Agent Michelle DiCesare welcomed the group, noting the clear message sent by a unanimous vote. “We are thrilled to welcome wardrobe workers at YPT into Local 822. Their unity shows strong commitment to safer workplaces and fair conditions. We look forward to productive first contract negotiations with YPT,” said DiCesare. International Vice President and Director of Canadian Affairs John Lewis celebrated the workers’ decision and emphasized the collective power gained by joining the union. “Workers’ voices are always stronger together, and the voice of all workers at YPT is even stronger today. Through collective bargaining, wardrobe workers will be able to protect the benefits they enjoy and secure the many advantages that come with union membership,” said Lewis.

Supporting People and National Projects: Creative Industries Coalition comments on Budget 2025 Toronto, November 5, 2025 The Creative Industries Coalition will continue to advocate for support to creative working people and new jobs in the creative industries sector in the future. Our national coalition has been advocating for a Live Performing Arts Tax Credit to incentivize private sector investments in nation-building projects celebrating our stories and music, developing new talent, protecting and enhancing our national and regional cultural sovereignty – all at a time when Canada is at risk. The Creative Industries Coalition is a broad national collective of unions, industry associations, venue owners and operators as well as producers that have been advocating for several years to replicate the success of the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit by introducing a similar labour-based tax credit to spur private sector investment in communities across Canada in every region of Canada’s Live Performing Arts Sector. Last week The Canadian Chamber of Commerce released “Artworks – The Economic and Social Dividends from Canada’s Arts and Culture Sector” highlighting the significant economic footprint of the arts and culture sector. Key findings include: 1. Arts and Culture Sector contributed more than $65 Billion to direct GDP in Canada in 2024 2. The total economic impact of the Sector is over $100 Billion in GDP 3. The Sector supports more jobs per dollar than other keys sector such oil and gas, manufacturing or agriculture 4. The sector generates an estimated $17 Billion in federal and provincial tax revenue. 5. The sector generates $29 in economic activity for every dollar in federal investment. Full letter on IATSE.net
