Is my unit covered by rent control in Berkeley?
There are two types of coverage under Berkeley's Rent Ordinance: Fully covered (Rent controlled, eviction protections, interest on security deposit to be paid to tenants annually), Partially covered (NOT rent controlled, but yes eviction protections and interest on security deposit to be paid annually)
Fully covered units (rent controlled): most multi-unit properties built before June 1980 and single-family homes with current tenants who moved in before 1996.
PARTIALY COVERED UNITS Are Not Rent Controlled: Includes most units built after 1980, condos, and single-family homes with current tenants who moved in on or after 1/1/1996. These units still have eviction protections and the right to annual security deposit interest.
