Leavitt added that the US would consider Iran in a state of “unconditional surrender” once Donald Trump determines the country no longer “poses a threat” to the United States.
She told reporters at the White House:
What the president means is that when he, as Commander in Chief of the US Armed Forces, determines that Iran no longer poses a threat to the United States of America, and the goals of Operation Epic Fury has been fully realized, then Iran will essentially be in a place of unconditional surrender, whether they say it themselves or not.
Uhm. I don't know who needs to hear this outside the White House, but that isn't how surrender works. The US government is mindnumbingly stupid.

Does anyone know of projects which have encoded a linguistic grammar in TEI format? I have been able to find documentation about and various examples of dictionaries and corpora, but so far no grammars. #TEI

And then it will just be done by companies outside the UK and only derivative products made available here. The harm will still be done.
But yes, good if our legislation sets a standard, but I'm still feeling very cynical these days. 😞

I'm sceptical that even if such an exemption was squashed in UK law that it would, overall, have much of an effect. But, I'd like to be proved wrong.

The recommended actions seem reasonable, if a bit closing the stable door after the horse has bolted, but I wonder if the government will actually listen.

If this is specifically for secretary hand (that you mention in one post) then 'The ABC of Secretary Hand' helped me. Understanding form and templates of certain types of documents helps as you then often know the kind of thing it might say. Tracing out strokes on a piece of paper also helps me.

I'm assuming in some of these cases the money was going directly to academics and when they said they used it for research it was for travel to swish conferences or similar. I've found that any unusual funding source is a *nightmare* for my institution's finance office! They seem to hate non-UKRI.

oh, and I suppose there is that guy (it is*always* guys) whose need to make 'banter' that was always punching down or slightly misogynistic so I avoid them. Or that guy who is a violent drunk, but I never had much to do with them anyway. But these are so tame and everyday compared to Epstein.

... my institution and was later hiring for a project and a young female colleague was thinking of applying for it, so I warned them. Their response was "James, I'm a woman in [redacted] studies, of course I've heard all about Professor [redacted]!" (But still glad I said something!)

Meet three scientists who said no to Epstein
The warning signs included a web search, a mother’s doubts, and inklings of a “sexist attitude”
The closest comparisons I can make relate to abusive colleagues: 1) a couple of instances when mentioning some researcher where female colleagues have then said "ah, but they did _this_ to me or a friend" and I thence turned down all invites from them. and 2) a famously abusive academic joined...

While I'll never be the kind of academic that wealthy paedophiles would target, you always wonder how you'd react if someone you didn't know offered to fund your research. I like to think I'd do due diligence on investigating them, partly because someone offering to fund it would be so unheard of!
