NOOOOOOOOO
NOOOOOOOOO
This storm went very tornadic right as it hit the surface warm front where there was substantial shear in the lowest 1km (veering from a SW to SE to E flow).
The storm has since crossed into the cold air north of the front.

I totally agree. That said, if the options are either
1. Sunny frozen tundra
2. Eternal overcast and 40s
I will take what's behind door 1 everytime
we're really just gonna be stuck with this pattern for the next decade huh

Had impressive snowfall rates and wind over the last hour on Long Island. We have unfortunately now switched over to sleet.
Goddamn it was a cold night in Upststate NY. The NYSM Philadelphia site got down to -37.6°F!
This is 1.7°F short of the network minimum temperature (39.3°F, also set by PHIL)

First aurora of 2026 didn't quite reach its potential, but still had a fun night out. I also captured two great horned howls on the barn in the foreground. What a hoot.

Quite the moisture gradient advecting across eastern NY this afternoon. I look forward to not living inside of a cloud.
The NYS Mesonet's anemometer at Buffalo Harbor State Park is getting absolutely walloped. During the last 2 hours, every 5-min observation period has had a wind gust over 60mph. So far, the peak gust is 72mph.
Holy moly
RAHHHHH
It's pretty obvious by my top 10 gusts that I did not really use my anemometer very much between 2022-2024.
These wind gusts were very different experiences.
During the 7/3 event, I was in an intense downdraft which allowed for me to actually see the wind while hunkering down in the car.
Yesterday, on the other hand, I was standing outside and the footage was visually underwhelming.
Pretty insane coincidence, I tied my all time recorded wind gust to the tenth of a mph yesterday (66.2 mph).
Both of these happened this year (partially because I have been making an effort to actually use my anemometer more and partially dumb luck).
Oh shi
NWS New York currently has the CWA under a Wind Advisory, with forecast gusts on the upper end of WA criteria.
I may be wishcasting a little bit here (I definitely am), but I have a feeling this might end up having a little more bite than folks are expecting.
