Clam shells sound warning of Atlantic ‘tipping point'.
New research from @exeter.ac.uk using centuries-old clam shells has found signs that key Atlantic Ocean currents may be losing stability.

It's scary how fast the earth is warming.

For a long time, the 🌊 ocean surface was warming at a slower 🐌 rate but the warming rate appears to have caught up 🐇.

➡️ In our study about the jump in SSTs, we also estimated a 0.27°C per decade warming of global SSTs (www.nature.com/articles/s41...)

'I lost everything': Swiss residents in shock after glacier debris buries village Swiss residents were struggling to absorb the scale of devastation caused by a huge chunk of glacier that has buried most of their picturesque village, in what scientists suspect is a dramatic example of the impact of climate change on the Alps.

IPCC 2022:

“In the near-term (2021-2040) risks are highest where species and people exist…in close association with ice or seasonal rivers (high confidence)”

Climeworks’ capture fails to cover its own emissions The carbon capture company Climeworks only captures a fraction of the CO2 it promises its machines can capture. The company is failing to carbon offset the emissions resulting from its operations – wh...

The big story here isn’t the failure of direct air capture (DAC) as a CO₂ removal (CDR) technique. It’s that Iceland is turning its back on CDR.

Social acceptance is so important for CDR to succeed in the long term, and not enough effort is being put into this.

I have a new analysis over at The Climate Brink exploring how rates of warming have changed over the past century.

Post-1970, GHGs (CO2, CH4, etc.) would have led to just under 0.2C per decade, but falling aerosols (SO2) have increased that rate to 0.25C. www.theclimatebrink....

❓Did you know that many climate models—the ones we rely on for future planning—have a serious blind spot and may be overconfident.

A new study in @commsearth.bsky.social reveals why this is a problem. And it’s all about polar ice sheets and climate tipping points. 1/🧵

Scientists fear losing essential climate data during Trump upheaval A temporary loss of access to key datasets on levels of CO2 in the atmosphere added to concern about the potential fallout of the Trump administration’s attacks on climate science

"A loss of access to climate or other scientific data hosted by the US government would impact researchers across the
planet, says @davidho.bsky.social. 'When it comes to scientific research the US really is exceptional. We put more money into R&D than anywhere else, & we make our data available.'"
