Access to healthcare (especially for back pain) in rural and northern Ontario can be challenging.

This helps make it a little easier.

Much of healthcare is built on the perspective that people are inherently weak and fragile, and need fixing.

And I believe it’s a genuinely well intentioned perspective.

Another perspective is that we are strong, resilient, and adaptable.

And I believe that’s a better perspective.

Image comparing AI to my services of online back pain assessments in a check box comparison.

AI checks off the first three boxes which include: almost infinite knowledge; faster, cheaper diagnosis; appointments at 2:00am.

But I get the last check box: able to get away with making a bad pun, or eye roll inducing joke and still be liked even more because of it.

Did you know…?

The majority of back pain will get better on its own, and it doesn’t require seeing a specialist, getting imaging, or paying money for specific treatments.

That’s it. That’s good news.

In-person care is great.

But accessibility matters.

That’s why online/virtual/telephone are great options for those facing mobility, health and distance challenges.

Inline Online Virtual Back Pain Consultations

It’s late at night.

Your back hurts.

And what you really want to know before booking with a prospective healthcare professional is if they have a favourite comic strip?

@tomunculus.bsky.social thanks so much for the like, and the repost. I mean not that reposts are better or anything (but they totally are!)

Do you have back pain, but are thinking that maybe you’d like to catch the flu or COVID on top of that?

If so, do not look for further information on my back pain clinic which offers virtual and telephone consultations.

Well played indeed.

Popularized back in never, the advice to β€œgo roll on a porcupine” as a treatment strategy for back pain should be avoided at all cost.

Even if it’s covered by your extended health plan.

Here’s the thing…

Even if COVID/infection control isn’t a worry for you, it is for others.

The simple (and it is simple) act of donning a mask at a patient’s request shows care and compassion.

Patients are already worried about their health. Why not ease this burden for them when they ask?

Who are you, who are so wise in the ways of science?

17.01.2026 14:10 πŸ‘ 3 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

Someone posted about prepping for a medical appointment they had, and the provider denied a request to wear an N95 mask for the patient’s safety because it’s β€œno longer a requirement.”

That is plain old bad healthcare provider-ing.

For a number of reasons.

Improve back pain, decrease risk of catching something else.

Virtual care can help.

You wouldn’t think that your patients feeling heard, and having enough time to ask their questions and understand the answers would be selling points.

Yet here we are.

Just the chemical (and slightly incomplete) abbreviation for alcohol.

I wanted it all to fit on one line :)

Regular physical activity
Whole foods
Managed stress
Regular restful sleep
Friendships
Avoid excess smoking/OH

Support programs, systems, and societies that prioritize these things FOR EVERYONE, and you prioritize good health.

A image of six silhouetted people sitting in close proximity in a waiting room. One person is wearing a mask. The other five people are maskless, and one of them is sneezing into their elbow with spray from the sneeze not being entirely contained, representing the challenges that people with health and autoimmune issues have in trying to access in-person care for their back pain.

Why offer virtual care for back pain?

Because sitting in a busy waiting room can be much riskier for people with health and autoimmune conditions.

Why offer virtual care for back pain?

Because mobility challenges can be a barrier to accessing in-person care.
