I maintain that "relatability" is one of the worst things to happen to creative writing and it must be combated

Hey that’s about the cost of the SSI Restoration Act, which would cut recipient poverty by 60%, eliminate marriage penalties, and modernize draconian asset limits.

The Iranian left has been beaten and destroyed, and has only recently started organizing again in any capacity. The American left needs an anchor point within Iran or at least a progressive yet mainstream media in the diaspora to start building shared reality.

IMO on the anti imperialist thing: I have spent my whole life trying to negotiate my Iranian, leftist, and now American identities to make sense. It has been the work of a lifetime. I had to come with terms with the unrealisticness of anyone else figuring this out on their own.

I think young Iranian leftists in the diaspora are constantly more hopeful abt Palestinian solidarity w/ Iran than the reality. Many Iranians are anti-palestine bc "they don't support our movements back" - ik you're not talking about Palestinians specifically but just to expand.

I am an Iranian and this is why I first started following your work on Mastodon almost 4 years ago. Furthermore, I appreciate this post more than a previous one that "welcomed" us to these dynamics - as if we have not had to tangle with them as long as everyone else.

Grok Exposed a Porn Performer’s Legal Name and Birthdateβ€”Without Even Being Asked In the latest in a string of privacy abuses from the chatbot, Grok provided porn performer Siri Dahl's full legal name and birthdate to the public, information she'd protected until now.

Grok is doxing a porn performer, after she spent years keeping this information private. Disgusting, abusive, deliberately harmful little product Elon's got there www.404media.co/grok-doxing-...

The left tried for decades to pass green energy subsidies, passed them, the subsidies worked, and now literally the entire planet's electricity grid is going to convert to solar+battery. It just doesn't feel like "tech" because it mostly produces kinda boring blue collar jobs instead of billionaires

Right. Meeting students where they are is about giving them a reading just hard enough to be challenging without being downright punitive. Assigning 'hard readings' regardless of student background is just detached from proven pedagogy and elitist.

Winique Orelus: Jackson Transplant β€˜Finds Opportunity,’ Opens Little Haiti Caribbean After years of building a life for himself in Mississippi, Haiti-born Winique Orelus opened his own restaurant, Little Haiti Caribbean, in Jackson.

β€œI came here with no money and no shoes and never even got to go to school, but today I’m clean, there’s no drinking or drugs in my life, and I have a 21-year-old son named Quincy, and I think that’s all just a blessing from God," Winique Orelus, owner of Little Haiti Caribbean in Jackson, said.

Kristi NEOM
3 hours ago (Edited)
Some extra context, which makes it so much worse: Two months ago on December 23rd Sivert Guttorm Bakken, a fellow teammate of Lægreid and Johan-Olav Botn was found dead in his hotel room in Italy where he'd suffocated while wearing an oxygen mask to help simulate a higher altitude by lowering the oxygen level. Johan-Olav Botn, who won gold in this event, was the one who found him and he dedicated his medal to Bakken both right after the finish and during his own interview.
So when Lægreid opened his interview by thanking his team, his parents, and saying
"there's one person who probably isn't watching this", everyone thought he would honour Bakken and dedicated his medal to him. But instead he launched in the teary eyed monologue about how he cheated on his girlfriend three months ago and only told her last week and hoped she would take him back. It was the twist of the century.

Artificially Large Skier Penises Should Stay Legal | Defector To ski jump is to momentarily become a god. The track is narrow and slick, and the athletes plummet down the sloped hill at almost 60 mph. They leave the track and take up, up, up into the sky, where…

Imagine how much more beauty, splendor, and excitement men's Olympic ski jumping could have if all of the men had bigger dicks.

Addendum: Also, there seems to be widespread denial that organizing is a craft in-and-of-itself. Like when people say "we will need bakers during the revolution" - it's like, yeah. And then other people say "we will need revolutionaries" and they mean gun dudes. But we actually need bureaucrats.

I also contend that in America our pride of our pop culture, and the mythos that, e.g., the USSR fell because they wanted our jeans, feeds this myth. We still want to make artists be our surrogates in politics. But like Kendrick said - they are not our saviors.

really horrified by the continued and escalating strangulation of Cuba by a global superpower that has absolutely no reason to do so other than pure spite

One way to judge a society's investments is asking: "what kinds of people and relationships will this investment create?" Sit with this question. Investment in repressive bureaucracies has become so normalized that we are desensitized to how far away from the best parts of humanity it takes us.

the horizon of what you can do. and by focusing on businesses it signals that you either need to start a business or wait for someone else. the barrier to entry is too high. and, tbh, I dont think many people would have as good a time at a third place as they think they will

mostly the fact that the whole conception is very white American. like other cultures take turns hosting or do gifts for hosts to help facilitate more home-based socializing. Americans though usually either think of themselves as a host or not. I think third place limits the view...

I'm not usually into third place as a framework but I like this idea a lot

on the balance i think partisan gerrymandering is bad but the only way it ends is if democrats weaponize it against republicans everywhere they can. wiping out republican lawmakers in blue states might bring the GOP to the table to end the practice.

Commentary: Always a city of neighborhoods, Los Angeles in recent years has seen the rise of more liberal activism in many of those communities, some of it owing to vastly improved outreach and voter contact work by the region’s Democratic Socialists. bit.ly/3O8JO14

America’s toxic future looks like East Palestine, Ohio, today Three years since one of the worst industrial disasters in US history, politicians, the media, and the public have forgotten about East Palestine. But we haven’t.

Just got back from East Palestine. So much going on in the world, but yesterday was the 3yr anniversary of the train derailment & chemical disaster that upended residents' lives foreverβ€”I had to be there. They are getting sicker. People are dying. Please remember them
