The Iranian left has been beaten and destroyed, and has only recently started organizing again in any capacity. The American left needs an anchor point within Iran or at least a progressive yet mainstream media in the diaspora to start building shared reality.
IMO on the anti imperialist thing: I have spent my whole life trying to negotiate my Iranian, leftist, and now American identities to make sense. It has been the work of a lifetime. I had to come with terms with the unrealisticness of anyone else figuring this out on their own.
I think young Iranian leftists in the diaspora are constantly more hopeful abt Palestinian solidarity w/ Iran than the reality. Many Iranians are anti-palestine bc "they don't support our movements back" - ik you're not talking about Palestinians specifically but just to expand.
I am an Iranian and this is why I first started following your work on Mastodon almost 4 years ago. Furthermore, I appreciate this post more than a previous one that "welcomed" us to these dynamics - as if we have not had to tangle with them as long as everyone else.

Addendum: Also, there seems to be widespread denial that organizing is a craft in-and-of-itself. Like when people say "we will need bakers during the revolution" - it's like, yeah. And then other people say "we will need revolutionaries" and they mean gun dudes. But we actually need bureaucrats.
I also contend that in America our pride of our pop culture, and the mythos that, e.g., the USSR fell because they wanted our jeans, feeds this myth. We still want to make artists be our surrogates in politics. But like Kendrick said - they are not our saviors.

One way to judge a society's investments is asking: "what kinds of people and relationships will this investment create?" Sit with this question. Investment in repressive bureaucracies has become so normalized that we are desensitized to how far away from the best parts of humanity it takes us.
the horizon of what you can do. and by focusing on businesses it signals that you either need to start a business or wait for someone else. the barrier to entry is too high. and, tbh, I dont think many people would have as good a time at a third place as they think they will
mostly the fact that the whole conception is very white American. like other cultures take turns hosting or do gifts for hosts to help facilitate more home-based socializing. Americans though usually either think of themselves as a host or not. I think third place limits the view...
I'm not usually into third place as a framework but I like this idea a lot
on the balance i think partisan gerrymandering is bad but the only way it ends is if democrats weaponize it against republicans everywhere they can. wiping out republican lawmakers in blue states might bring the GOP to the table to end the practice.
