Last year from January to June 471 people were killed or seriously injured on the roads in Birmingham, UK- and that was celebrated as an 18% reduction on the year before. Population is bigger than Brussels (9 deaths) but smaller than Berlin (55 deaths). We have so much further to go.

"Resilience is not loud. It is a plant pushing through debris, coral growing around plastic, a flower adapting to survive in altered soil. In reshaping discarded materials into botanical forms, I reflect natureβs quiet determination to endure, even within the landscapes we have changed."
Does seem to imply it's intrinsically unfair for rural populations to access electricity generated by a fossil fuel power station located near an urban centre. Only noone would make that claim! Because it's self-evidently silly.

Worth noting his objection to no fault divorce. I worked a bit on the campaign for that, and one of the striking things with the scholarship was the evidence that demonstrated allowing it led to a drop in suicides of married women.

If you're looking for the source of academia's leaky pipeline--it's not women's lack of commitment, it's the misogyny of men like this.
To: Jeffrey epstein[jeevacationΒ©gmail.com] From: roger schank Sent: Mon 1/4/2010 12:15:13 PM Subject: there is a simpler explanation about women and intelligence intelligence comes about in part from real focus (goal-directed (this is why you have the absent minded professor caricature) it is a rare woman who is not first and foremost focussed on what thinking and feeling about her hard to be brilliant if you are worrying if you look fat or why hates you or why you dont own a kelly bag roger schank http://www.rogerschank.com/
Relevant to today's conversation about AI's inherent sexism, here's an email from cognitive psychologist and early AI theorist Roger Schank, arguing to Epstein that women can't be truly intelligent, because they care too much about what other people think.

Remarkable continuity of service by Lothian Buses and its predecessors evidenced in this map. In 1960 I could get the 8, 9, 14 or 19 to town from my nearest stops, or walk to the end of the road and get the 21 or 27. Sixty-six years later I can get all the same buses from the same stops to town!
