Before I give my opinion, I want to be absolutely clear that I think that pro-Palestine protestors were sincerely outraged by what was happening in Gaza, and were correct to be.
But…I think that a lot of campus protest is driven by social forces beyond just the moral clarity of the issue.
A lot of (mostly female) academics adopted using their credentials in their social media usernames when right wingers were belittling Jill Biden's doctorate in education as an act of solidarity. But as you say "Dr." AND "PhD" is a bit much and IMO, the bio is a better place for any of it.

It's not really about China for me, it's more of a general distaste for "get that bag" culture.
