Hessle Foreshore is a sanctuary for many. A place where you can look out on the world without feeling it’s staring back at you. Watching that powerful flow makes you feel you’re witnessing the end of a river’s journey before it’s cast out to the open seas. A place of melancholy beauty.
The horizons stretched for ever on all sides. We’d witness the sun do its full daily journey from rise to set.
It provided a daily rusty palette of grey blues and rusty browns as its strong tides flowed past.
So here’s part of the story. I grew up just outside Hull on the banks of the Humber Estuary.
This huge expanse of water had a huge effect on the people around it. It effected our magnetic bearing. How we sheltered from the wind. How we rarely walked south due to the obvious obstacle it provided.

Social media seems to be full of people doing ‘big skies’ painting. However I notice very little process or narrative…just lots of beautiful studios with no spilt paint, artists who look like cover models and a lack of showing the actual windswept location.

I’ve drawn buildings for a long time now, but last year decided it’s time to return to abstract landscapes.
I’ve always enjoyed oil on canvas work and want to make my subject matter more local. I live in East Yorkshire, so big skies and stretched horizons are a massive inspiration.
