That's a lovely, touching piece. I'm sorry for your loss.

"I looked up, and up, and up, and up, until I saw Tom Noonan's face, looking down at me with a curious expression. 'What did you say your name was?' he asked." A remembrance of my friend Tom, lost too soon. www.rogerebert.com/mzs/a-beauti...
Hipster Conan, what is best in life?
To conquer brunch, to split a single-origin pastry with no one, and to hear the lamentations of those still waiting for a table.
This again speaks to my point that the lower reaches of BBC news just seems to be written by not very bright people
It's confirmed: Planetary warming has significantly accelerated over the past 10 years. This is the first statistically significant evidence of an acceleration of global warming that many had been warning about.

It strikes me that what the Cass review has 'achieved' is a manufactured lack of evidence. It doesn't feel a million miles from what the tobacco companies used to do.
I thought this was a joke, but "Ms Badenoch has ranked MPs based on how well they are performing on X" is an actual quote from this article.
All the guests at the Grand Central Hotel were evacuated to the Radisson Blu according to the BBC live blog.
I am also shocked by the lack of coverage of this fire. Itโs so far only affecting the Union Street buildings, but one of those has partially collapsed, from what I can tell backwards into the station. And itโs not yet contained. This is major and more than halfway down BBCโs homepage.

Video screenshot from Reddit. Building is now a shell with flames visible in every window.
The roof has collapsed embers rise into the night sky.
The fire at Glasgow central station is utterly devastating. Shops, homes and our transport link to England are being wiped out.
I am amazed by the limited news coverage.
BREAKING: The US has confirmed those 168 school girls and staff were liberated by a Tomahawk missile and their rescuers were liberated by a 2nd Tomahawk in a "double-tap". That's two liberations for the price of one. If you don't support this, I can only assume you hate freedom.
This is a major fire in the centre of #Glasgow โ Renfield St, bottom of Union St, west half of Gordon St closed. Central Station closed and going to stay that way at least until tomorrow morning. Most services cancelled, low level line running but not stopping at Central.
The lowest-ranking team to ever reach reach the FA Cup last 8 (at least, since there's been a league system allowing ranking down that far) are Lincoln City in 2017 - at the time, top of the National League, 93rd in the English league pyramid.
The sight of men harassing and attacking a woman in the name of defending women and children is sickening.

To mark International Women's Day, meet Lt Cmdr. Madeleine Barclay. First Officer on HMS Fidelity.
To my knowledge, the first woman to officially serve as First Officer on a Royal Navy vessel deployed on combat duty. Achieving this involved a three-way war between Navy, SOE and the WRNS /1 ๐งต #IWD

Women have always gone to sea and faced the sea's dangers. Women were in many of the naval losses chronicled here, and are numbered among the casualties. Remembering them, and all the women afloat and ashore whose lives are caught up with the sea, on this #InternationalWomensDay #NavalHistory
I thought reflexive Atalantism was all about being a fast runner, boar hunting, and occasionally being distracted by golden apples.
Unlike some others, I strongly support public inquiries (and gave evidence in person to COVID inquiry). But only if we learn from them. We @independentsage.bsky.social showed many COVID failures due to forgetting Philips inquiry into BSE. Now history repeating itself with Chilcot ๐
Yes, the French booksellers association forced the Paris Book Festival to drop Amazon sponsorship due to Amazon "seeking to flood the market with fake AI-generated books, promoted by fake reviews, written by fake readers [which rise] to the top of fake rankings"๐ฅ MORE OF THIS, PLEASE ๐ฅ
