The BC Basic Income Panel found that almost half of those living in poverty were essentially full time, full year workers. The idea that poverty is confined just to those without jobs and those on income assistance is a zombie idea. Kudos to @gillianpetit.bsky.social and Maytree for this report!
I had hoped to see more on water reuse, but the updated act remains limited on its oversight and application to water reuse applications. A missed opportunity for sure.

In short: while framed as “modernization,” the amendments could reduce protections for Alberta’s rivers and weaken safeguards for communities and ecosystems that depend on them. Not great news.
These updates do nothing to address limited oversight and does not address issues surrounding Indigenous water rights, cultural connections to water, and future community resilience.
These changes reduce transparency in assessing environmental impact and does nothing to improve scientific input in the process. This could lead to negative or unoredictable outcomes for aquatic ecosystems.
This watershed merger change effectively enables inter-basin transfers without proper scrutiny of cumulative ecosystem impacts, including on biodiversity and watershed function.
Consolidating the Peace/Slave and Athabasca basins into one legal basin means water can move between them without special legislative approval, even though they’re distinct natural systems, majorly increases ecological risk to the waterways.
A key worry is that the law now lets licensees more easily fully use their allocations, includingchanging “return flow” requirements, which potentially means less water left in rivers to support aquatic life, recreation, and ecosystems.
Bill 7’s Water Act changes raise serious ecological concerns. The amendments prioritize short-term economic use over long-term aquatic health & ecosystem integrity. Myself & 2 colleagues at the UofC broke down the changes and potential impacts: ablawg.ca/2025/12/11... #abpoli 🧵
Albertans should be paying close attention to the impacts of Bill 7 - which has just gone through the legislature and amends the Water Act. Again - it's bad news. Myself and a couple of colleagues have more on this coming down the pipe next week, but again, not great.
Commercializing/privatizing our most precious resource, water, can have catastrophic impacts on nearby communities and environments, and puts corporate profits above people. This video talks about a phenomenon happening around the globe. And it's bad news.
Not to mention treatment of water (& wastewater) is expensive. We need to be better at reducing our environmental impact, one a big way we do that is through education and outreach. The very things targeted with this cut. Do better #yyccc
There are so many studies identifying that water availability and security will become an increasing concern in the region. And we're rapidly growing. Without conservation initiatives, we're setting ourselves up for failure.

Infuriating to see that #yyccc has no spine and limited foresight. Cutting environmental and climate funding, especially with an impact on water services, provides limited savings now and increased costs long-term. This is nothing more than a dog whistle.
Who's next?
Now that the notwithstanding clause has become a routine policymaking tool for the UCP, we need to look ahead to their next targets.
This month's AGM will provide clues.
It's rare we're in agreement with the Fraser Institute on urban policy however they absolutely nail the reasons why this move to repeal blanket rezoning is a bad idea & goes against the free-market conservative values many pushing it on #yyccc claim to hold.
