I already know and really like one of the families - a woman and her son from Turkey, her husband is in prison and she had to flee for political reasons. There are many different goodies as Thank You's for your donation, if you choose to contribute. I will be really happy if some of you do!

I will move into a co-housing project soon, a building where all neighbors know and like each other :). We are planning to offer 2 flats to families with a refugee background & are collecting starter funding for these 2 flats via crowdfunding (with many goodies!). www.startnext.com/en/soliwohnu...

Misinformation research has a causality problem: lab experiments are limited; observational studies confounded.

We used causal inference on 9.9M tweets, quantifying effects in the wild while blocking backdoor paths.

Does misinfo get higher engagement? Are following discussions more emotional? 🧡

Is social media dying? How much has Twitter changed as it became X? Which party now dominates the conversation?

Using nationally representative ANES data from 2020 & 2024, I map how the U.S. social media landscape has transformed.

Here are the key take-aways 🧡

1. The general effects of digital technology use on well- being are likely in the negative spectrum, but very smallβ€”potentially too small to matter.
2. No screen time is created equal; different uses will lead to different effects.
3. Digital technology use is more likely to affect short-term positive or negative affect than long-term life satisfaction.
4. The dose makes the poison; it appears that both low and excessive use are related to decreased well-being, whereas moderate use is related to increased well-being.
5. Adolescents are likely more vulnerable to effects of digital technology use on well-being, but it is important not to patronize adolescentsβ€”effects are comparable and adolescents not powerless.
6. The current empirical research has several limitations: high-quality studies with large-scale samples, objective measures of digital technology use, and experience sampling of well-being are still missing.

5 years ago, @niklasjohannes.bsky.social and I summarized the literature on the effects of digital technology use on adolescent well-being as follows.

Do you think the findings still apply?

Transparent peer review to be extended to all of Nature’s research papers From today, all new submissions to Nature that are published will be accompanied by referees’ reports and author responses β€” to illuminate the process of producing rigorous science.

Nature goes full open review!

I have complicated feelings about how and when this was achieved!

And they should be apparent to you after even a moment’s thought about the subtext here!

Are #smartphones and #socialmedia harming a generation?

This is a hotly debated and often polarizing debate. So we surveyed over 120 experts on the topic to see where there was genuine consensus (or not), like experts have previous done for climate change.

Another study showing sample sizes in psychology increase over time. Several reasons, but that the increase is stronger in journals with stronger open science policies is interesting. Triangulation with other studies (done in the discussion) suggests better research practices are one cause.

Ok folks, deep breaths.

There is very real reason to worry about the dynamic emerging between Washington and Moscow when it comes to Ukraine. But there is also very real reason to believe that Ukraine and Europe can create a better outcome.
