This is lovely, and now I miss the smell of NETX swamp - it's part cedar, part rot, part honeysuckle. Not very pleasant, but it makes me remember some really, really good days with people I will always love.
I was on an equestrian drill team.
βThat which does not kill us makes us stronger.β
A pleasure to welcome the one and only @anamariecox.bsky.social to the pages of Texas Highways.
What a huge compliment! Thank you!
I really would appreciate any time you all could spend with this. It's a little different from my usual stuff. Thank you!
5/ Some things mark you as belonging to a place not because they're beautiful but because they're a part of you.
Please check it out! It was my first piece for @texashighways.bsky.social and I look forward to writing more.

4/ During my first winter alone in Austin, I smelled rotten eggs; I went full hound dog around the perimeter of my house. Turned out to be the Luling effect: hydrogen sulfide from oil fields 40 miles south. The problem had a name, and it wasn't mine alone to solve.

3/ But I wanted to write about scent and memory. Baking with mesquite flour over an open fire. Petrichor on limestone after a drought. The specific smell of the last burnt coffee at the bottom of a carafe at an AA meeting.

2/ Fun fact: Japan treats cedar allergies as a national public health crisis. Specialized curtains, pollen-resistant clothing, government mitigation programs, remote work policies during season. Meanwhile Texas has Reddit threads about drinking cedar berry tea.

1/ Every winter and spring, cedar pollen blankets Central Texas and makes millions of people miserable. For @texashighways.bsky.social, I wrote about why I look forward to it anyway and what it taught me about belonging somewhere. texashighways.com/culture/find...
It is interesting they did not do this before he got into the run-off!

I mean, it's not just conservatives, either. Have you ever heard of Tipper Gore, sonny?
REMEMBER ED MEESE?
Yes, exactly right. Your OP just made it sound like someone just put it together that porn panics often seek to reach female conservative (and often not conservative) voters.
We are not disagreeing! I just think your initial post made it seem like what is happening is new, not the same song with a new band.
You seem like a nice kid! We're not disagreeing that anti-obscenity outreach can be a way to appeal to women. I'm just amused by your framing. The Pew research doesn't "explain" anything new. Women have been less accepting of pornography (at least as reported by public polling) for decades.
In 2016, the Republican Party declared porn to be a βpublic health crisis that is destroying the lives of millions.β
As far as the realization that attacking obscenity is a way of appealing to women: May I introduce you to the moral purity movement of the 19th century?

The idea that "going after adult entertainment" is some kind new innovation for the GOP is making me so old.
I mean, what do they teach in schools these days????
Two types of people: Those who watch porn and those that are ashamed to admit it.
haha I forgot we are also in the next century. I am old.
Anyways, here's a funny story that I guess explains why you Youngs think the crusade is new?

I'm not sure it's a "hidden reason"? They've been going after porn for, let's see, most of the 20th century and it's always been to appeal to conservative women (with the added bonuses of enforcing gender roles, demonizing bodily autonomy).
Surprised she didn't attribute it to MLK.
"Cornyn is a cardboard box filled with Senate leadership PAC money, and Ken Paxton is a feral raccoon with nothing to lose."
I didn't say there weren't any.
PAT RYAN: 'Does the US want to be the policeman of the Middle East getting nothing but spending precious lives & trillions.' Rng a bell?
COLBY: Defer to you
R: That was Trump. How about this - 'we simply cannot afford to get enmeshed in a Middle East war'
C: Defer to you
R: That was actually you
I think space can handle some men.
If we could just get behind my proposal to send men to space, I think that's a better solution.
