Ohhh yay you’re still in Japan! Nice! I’m jelly, except for having to get coffee at Starbucks

They have Starbucks in Australia?
In all seriousness, thanks!! I learned a lot.
Did you write it, or did Claude?
Bro, what do these words mean?
UK: Prince Andrew arrested.
South Korea: Former President Yoon sentenced for life.
Brazil: Former President Bolsonaro serving a 27-year sentence.
USA: President Trump demands $10 billion payout from taxpayers.
I just replaced my iPhone 11 Pro from 2019. It was starting to run a little slower, but the nail in the coffin was that faceid sensor broke (needed for more than just faceid). I wouldn’t say it’s unusable but given how much we use it, seemed silly to belabor getting a new one.
Hard to think of a better appointment to the RBA board than my old mate, Bruce Preston. By any measure he's Australia's leading monetary economist. Good news for the Bank, for Australia, and for economics.
(Many moons ago we were baby economists together at the RBA.)
Amongst other things, this again highlights the core point about due process. It’s bad enough to be in a “show me your papers” situation, but your precious citizen/non-citizen, “legal”/“illegal” distinctions are meaningless when you can’t prove anything to authorities because they don’t give a shit.
4 Lakota men were kidnapped by ICE in Minneapolis. 3 of them were taken to what used to be a concentration camp for Native people, and the only people talking about it are other Indigenous people. I am angry but mostly numb, I am so used to this at this point. We are always forgotten.
Murder. And not just the one who pulled the trigger.
A new NYT video analysis by confirms that Renee Good's vehicle did not run over Jonathan Ross and did not strike him. It's possible that it brushed up against him, but that remains unclear. Ross should be under arrest. This is a gift link. www.nytimes.com/2026/01/15/v...
A friendly reminder to everyone still using X/Twitter: stop it.
I’d say quite the opposite, Americans have had a remarkably effective and swift regime change: from posterboy democracy to full fledged authoritarianism.
Sadly it was clear as day that this was always the intention, folks.

While I agree this is an excellent choice, the timing of a prize for “showing how technology can lead to sustained growth” with AI and the state of democracy at the precipice… I just hope “spoke too soon” won’t be next years’ meme
We are hiring!
Assistant or Associate Professor of economics in the Econ Dept at University of Melbourne.
