3/6, 1st Round: (4) The Black Crowes vs (13) Kristin Hersh — March Sadness 90s Edition
I love how Annie Zaleski’s @marchxness.bsky.social essay on “Your Ghost” lets Hersh have the last word “My life experience plays a huge part in these songs, but I don’t think they’re stories about me. Everybody I’ve ever lost is in that song.” So sad!

Your Ghost was my (reluctant) 2nd choice to write about this @marchxness.bsky.social for just the reason @anniezaleski.bsky.social puts so aptly: “it’s comforting to think that someone we love is just a phone call away, even in the afterlife, and that we can summon them at will to come visit” 💜💜

3/6, 1st Round: (4) The Black Crowes vs (13) Kristin Hersh — March Sadness 90s Edition
My @marchxness.bsky.social essay on Kristin Hersh's "Your Ghost" is up! Not only do I share copious details about the song (come for the guitar treasure hunt, stay for the record label anger) but I reminisce about growing up in the 1990s and discovering Throwing Muses. marchxness.com/1stround-bla...

March Sadness 90s Edition
A yearly March Madness-style tournament of essays about songs we love (and occasionally loathe)
“Your Ghost” might be considered the inverse of Kate Bush’s “Wuthering Heights.” @anniezaleski.bsky.social might get my vote based on this alone, although @levin.bsky.social made me think about the Black Crowes in a whole new way. marchxness.com/#/1stround-b... #marchsadness

Read this gorgeous essay about this gorgeous song: "Your Ghost" by Kristin Hersh. If you don't know it yet... you should. C'mon, Michael Stipe sings on it too - would love for them to work together again. I probably CC'd Conan the night this aired.
Thanks to Annie Z for this great read!

“I had been profoundly moved by the band’s 1992 album Automatic for the People. At that point in my life, when nothing but possibility loomed ahead of me, I didn’t fully understand R.E.M’s ruminations on mortality, grief, politics and restlessness.” The best bit of music writing I’ve read all week 📼

Love a matchup — here, @levin.bsky.social and @anniezaleski.bsky.social — where I learn several liner notes’ worth of detail. Read and vote!

I was pretty shocked at how she was portrayed. It definitely stood out in a negative way.

This gorgeous chunk loaf of a beaver is enjoying some grass along a Seattle-area riverside. The sun is out-ish. This damp brown-furred chungus of a water monster cares not for the world. It is likely happier than you or I will ever know.
Met this beautiful beef unit on my run this morning. Keep on keeping on, chief.

Had a lovely time with the folks at @storyhour.bsky.social last night -- I read from "The Visitors," which riffs on a future with my characters from "The Only Song Worth Singing," and then we all heard a remarkable tale by @jenniferhudak.bsky.social -- a great evening all around!

This is Slam Bamboo; they were popular in the 80s in Cleveland. He didn’t play for them super long. Trent played with a bunch of other local bands too.

Sarah Biffen was one of the most popular portrait artists of the Regency Era. How did a farm workers daughter, born with no hands, become so successful she even painted the King? We discuss her epic story this week on Vulgar History, with guest @kristenklopez.bsky.social
