A phenomenon I find interesting is the yearning for corporations to launch copyright nukes on the AI companies. Which is to say there is such a feeling of hopelessness and a kind of legal void around this stuff that many people are demanding someone, anyone, do something about it in court.

That the U.S. government had a flatscreen TV up so they could see how the invasion of Venezuela landed with Catturd and FirstName BunchOfNumbers on X shows a special kind of brain rot.
Wow. If this decision holds up on appeal, the redistricting war Trump kicked off to save the GOP majority in the House will likely result in a net gain for *Democrats.*
I wanted to offer some thoughts on the Gates climate memo that has been circulating this week. While I can't directly speak for others, I can say that my own response is one of dismay & deep frustration (and that this view is shared by many climate/Earth scientists). [1/n]
Not new, but #Zuckerberg criminal energy once more: Visiting a website with #Facebok Pixel installed a local server on ur #Android device which connected anonymous users' behavior (incl incognito mode) to real users if u also had the Facebook or #Instagram app. localmess.github.io 🤯
Tis a fine troll, but sure ‘tis no presidential candidate
Bummer. Best of luck. Look forward to more good stuff in the future.

Catalist's 2024 "What Happened" report is out. I consider this the most reliable source for how various demographics voted in the 2024 election. catalist.us/whathappened...
Details about a flight of immigrants that landed many days ago? Too secret to reveal.
Details about an imminent military strike? Not classified, not a breach of national security and not a big deal.
Secrets under Trump depend on who asks and who tells.

The story of this man's abduction and deportation to a brutal El Salvador prison, without any due process—and apparently by mistake!—is the stuff of nightmares, literally ripped from some dystopian fiction. Kafka or Orwell. Or Stalin's Russia. Hitler's Germany. Or apparently, Donald Trump's America.

Statement begins: The mass firing of both new hires and recently promoted senior staff within NOAA, including mission-critical and life-saving roles at the National Weather Service (NWS), is profoundly alarming. It appears that NOAA staff fired today include meteorologists, data and computer scientists responsible for maintaining and upgrading weather predictive models, and technicians responsible for maintaining the nation’s weather instrumentation network (among many others). Housed within NOAA, the U.S. NWS is a truly world-class meteorological predictive service, perhaps singularly so. Its cost of operation is only ~$3-4/yr per taxpayer—equivalent to a single cup of coffee—and yields a truly remarkable return on investment (at least 10 to 1, and perhaps 100 to 1, depending on methods of estimation). NOAA and the NWS collectively offer tens to hundreds of billions of dollars each year in net economic benefit through a combination of averted losses and efficiencies gained....
I have written a short statement responding to mass firings today of #NOAA / National Weather Service (#NWS) staff (which were concentrated among recent hires as well as highly experienced staff who had recently been promoted). Please see below screenshot & below for full text.

This is a crazy paper. Fine-tuning a big GPT-4o on a small amount of insecure code or even "bad numbers" (like 666) makes them misaligned in almost everything else. They are more likely to start offering misinformation, spouting anti-human values, and talk about admiring dictators. Why is unclear.
This. This. This.
I've said it before but it's more true now; if Clearlake bought the club from Clearlake now they'd sack everyone and do a year long tour going on about how badly we're run.
