Iβm quoted in this excellent Scientific American article on the incredible Zagros mountains, the focus of much of my PhD and postdoc research. The Zagrosβs unique tectonic history explains the Gulfβs rich oil and gas reserves and ultimately the Gulf itself, including the narrow Strait of Hormuz.

A thread for the 15-year anniversary of the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. I wonβt have a chance to post it on the day, so Iβm doing it a couple days early. Note that the work Iβm posting was carried out by many brilliant people. 1/

Better still, tax profits from property sales like most other countries do (heck even the US). Time to tax unearned income, not just earned income

This is great. That orange crosswalk is ^so^ dangerous. I once saw a driver blast through while a pedestrian was mid way across, missing causing a fatality by inches.

Colourful map showing the tectonic plates of the Cascadia subduction zone from Northern California to northern Vancouver Island.
Cartoon map showing the tectonic setting of the Cascadia subduction zone, where the Juan de Fuca plate slips beneath the North American Plate from California to northern Vancouver Island.
326 years ago tonight (9 p.m. Jan. 26, 1700) a M~9 Cascadia subduction earthquake rocked the west coast from #VancouverIsland to northern California. The Juan de Fuca Plate slipped up to 20 m, causing a large tsunami, strong shaking and landslides

Very interesting! This seems to match @ezgikarasozen.bsky.socialβs relocated EQ catalogue which shows scattered seismicity right along the coastline and in a few places just offshore. Fortunately there shouldnβt be much of a tsunami hazard as the faults are buried and earthquakes mostly M6 or less.
