Graphic of busy car-filled road and text stressing that car dependency is the opposite of freedom. Mobility freedom comes from mobility choices. Graphic by the Urban Truth Collective.
Gas price hikes & shortages βfuelβ controversy, especially when theyβre βdrivenβ by an illegal war. But letβs not forget one of the most important discussions that should flow from such hikes β how they spotlight the difference between places with mobility choices, and places that are car-dependent.
Cartoon with Trump saying βright now you see a very deep hole, but have you seen my plans for my big, beautiful ballroom? Itβs going to have golden drapes! Iβve always liked gold.β The reporter replies βI asked about your plan for the war you started.β
This may seem predictable coming from a city planner, but having an actual plan should be a requirement for starting a war, especially an illegal one.

Very interesting to see conservative-coded language used for progressive purposes here. Looking forward to what comes next for this project from some of my favourite urbanism thinkers!

Yes!

DHS claimed "an ICE agent had fired 'defensive shots' into Martinez's vehicle after Martinez 'intentionally ran over' another agent."
But body cam video now "shows that Martinez's vehicle, a blue Ford Fusion, was stationary or going at a very low rate of speed when he was fatally shot."
Although Iβve been involved with homelessness policy for decades, Iβm NOT an expert at it. Very few city planners are. @nerd4cities.bsky.social admits itβs out of his wheelhouse too, but I appreciate his data-driven approach here. Spoilers: rent rates are key & housing SAVES public money.
Comments?
Excuse the bad language, but this is where we are at right now:
hey quick Q for anyone, does food take a lot of oil to grow, package, and distribute
A must watch if youβre curious WTF people are so scared of with 15-minute citiesβ¦ good lord π
βBecause if we donβt step up, nobody else will.β
Image of a car filled highway in congestion and gridlock, with three cigarette packs in front, one named gas, the second named hybrid, and the third named EV. The main text says βtaste the freedom.β At the bottom is the tagline for the Urban Truth Collective. Car dependency is the opposite of freedom.
Car dependency is a hell of a drug. #UrbanTruth
I made a decision to stay put after considering a move to a wooded suburb. My son currently walks to work and I enjoy having the option to walk downtown or to the grocery store in the opposite direction. I want less dependence on combustion engines and less time spent in traffic.
Note this IMPORTANT paragraph.
βSome urbanists claim [the 15-Minute City] manufactured controversy has βdied down,β but the truth is that in many ways, the disinformation achieved its goal.β
Thatβs NOT ok. With or without the brand, the concept of proximity is critical & common sense. Discuss it.
This is one of the biggest peeves I have with urban sprawl. If developers and homeowners in the neighbourhoods outside the Henday were forced to pay (either in home price or taxes) fair value for what costs the city absorbs downtown living would be much more attractive financially.
Absolutely the best thing doing the rounds just now. And the best critique of late capitalism you will ever see.
She's right. She just didn't finish the thought:
"...because Donald Trump is so co-opted by Russian kompromat that Putin can do whatever he wants anyway".
Ben Stiller asked the White House X account to leave βTropic Thunderβ out of its deranged propaganda video, saying βWar is not a movie.β The montage, which mixes movie scenes with real Iran footage, is offensive to anyone with a brain.
βοΈβ The organizers of the 2026 Winter Paralympic Games brought out the flag of Ukraine at the opening ceremony, despite the position of the National Paralympic Committee of Ukraine, which demanded that Ukrainian symbols not be used at the event next to the Russian flagβ¦
Putinβs orders.
Urban sprawl is bankrupting us. Applies to NZ (and Auckland gets a mention)
I struggle to understand why there are so many media personalities who are taken seriously in conservative circles while being completely indistinguishable from ham-fisted parodies of themselves.
WATCH: Think 15-Minute City conspiracy theorists are just unhinged tin-foil hat nut jobs ranting about global overlords? Well, drop everything and watch this hard-hitting story by the @thedailyshow.com to be proven⦠um⦠#UrbanTruth
Congrats @culdesac.bsky.social
(ps, walkable cities can have cars)
Filled up the car last night. Tesla Model 3 LR (369 mi range). Battery takes 70 kWh when down to below 10%
We pay 8.79 cents/kWh from our local public utility
So the cost to fill up my car in the convenience of my garage is (70 x 0.0879) = $6.15
Don't know how we are going to survive.
Some people will say that the comparison isn't fair because cars will actually take you somewhere. Then please explain why people buy stuff like this to drive it to the office
The post isnβt about whether the object is useful. The post is about the consequences of dependency on the object. #CarDependency
Savage but true.
