Read Antkind by Charlie Kaufman. Has approximately 100 very funny jokes. Had it been 200 pages long it would have been one of the best novels ever. But it is 700 pages and it drags.

I hear there was originally meant to be a reveal that the storyteller was the genie.

Maybe one could design an RPG to avoid these things. Like the more questions you ask an NPC the bigger the chance that something bad happens, I don’t know.

Or if they try to investigate a dead end the DM just shouts "DEAD END!"

If there’s an NPC giving exposition, in normal fiction the scene would just end once the relevant info has been given. But in an RPG the players don’t know what info is relevant so they just keep talking forever.

Also they might end up investigating some dead end where nothing happens.

I’ve listened to some podcasts of people playing RPGs. Sometimes it’s entertaining, but they are so slow.
