Winter bird Count 2024

Currently doing the Christmas Bird Count at Lake Merritt and quickly realizing I'm way out of my element here lol. But I'm learning so much from these way more experienced bird watchers.

i’ll say that RFK is the guy that genuinely frightens me because i think he would happily let as many people suffer and die as it took for him to feel vindicated about his beliefs. a totally amoral person who doesn’t seem to believe that other minds exist.

There is apparently a great horned owl hanging out in the tree outside my apt right now.

After securing a majority on the North Carolina Supreme Court in 2022, Republican justices promptly overturned a ruling that had struck down GOP gerrymanders, paving the way for their party’s lawmakers to draw a new map designed to hand them several congressional districts. By then, Democrats already had no recourse outside of state courts: This U.S. Supreme Court has shut the door on complaints of partisan gerrymandering proceeding in federal courts. The maneuver paid off last week. The GOP flipped three U.S. House seats, a windfall in light of that chamber’s tiny overall margin.

The final House results have now landed as 220-215 for the GOP. That means the House majority came down to the 3 NC seats the GOP flipped thanks to its brand new gerrymander.

And that gerrymander hinged on NC's supreme court flipping in 2022.

Wore my BART sweater today, and I think this is why the transit gods blessed me. Took 2 BART rides and 2 MUNI rides, and never waited more than 2 min at any point, even without looking at the transit times on the way into SF! Truly a holiday miracle.

This! Also, that scroll helps them make a few dollars off of the recipe you're getting for free that we used to have to use cookbooks to get. Like, go spend money on supporting cookbook authors or stop complaining!
