WHO warns low taxes on sugary drinks and alcohol pose health risks
Low taxes, which are not in line with inflation, are ineffective in reducing alcohol or sugary drink consumption, the World Health Organization warns.
Taxation is a secret weapon against alcohol and sugary drinks consumption. But if too low, it's ineffective to yield results, plus makes us turn blind eye on addressing other structural issues with the who food and drink supply chain. www.euronews.com/health/2026/...

@dorotasienkiewicz.bsky.social, Senior Policy Expert at @eurohealthnet.bsky.social, calls for a shift from individual responsibility to systemic change: primordial prevention of NCDs must target systems and environments before disease emerges. The next EU MFF should finance health, not illness.

Reeves says rules and red tape are βboot on the neckβ of business
At the Mansion House dinner she calls for regulators to allow more risk to clear the way for economic growth
Cutting "red tape" (aka public protections), as Reeves is doing, does not save money. Instead, it transfers costs from the rich to the poor. Other people pay for financial recklessness, filthy rivers, air pollution, lax building standards and consumer rip-offs.

βWhat makes this campaign problematic is that the only solution to #obesity being promoted (aside from surgery) is medication. No mention of #prevention even as the French govtβs obesity plan is expected in Sept".
βNo coincidence that they target cities known for strong obesity prevention efforts.β

Experts said more research is needed to determine whether ultra-processed foods directly raise the risk of premature death β or if they are simply a βbystanderβ with other factors to blame.
The new study, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, indicates that for every 10% increase in the proportion of diets that were made up of ultra-processed foods, there was a 2.7% rise in the risk of premature death.
