The Secret Police Playbook
How DHS reflects historical lessons from dictatorships
New, at Can We Still Govern?: Christian Gläßel and
@ascharpf.bsky.social have studied the formation of secret police in other countries. They explain the parallels with Trump's immigration enforcement.
The key factor is career incentives not ideology. 🧵

I Watched 6 Hours of DOGE Bro Testimony. Here's What They Had to Say For Themselves
The hours of videos provide fascinating, or perhaps horrifying, insight into the thinking of someone inside DOGE.
I have watched 6 hours of a DOGE bro deposition. The whole thing, start to finish. It's a fascinating, and horrifying, look at the people who caused so much damage, didn't really achieve anything at all, while still being so sure they are right. Here's what they said: www.404media.co/i-watched-6-...

Many psychologists are treating LLMs as if they are the mind of god.
This study had chatGPT rate how central academic disciplines are to various constructs.
Why would chatGPT know this?
Where is the evidence its ratings are reliable or valid?

In this lecture, @lioneltrolling.bsky.social offers a brilliant synthesis of the fascism debate, demonstrates why it makes sense to conceptualize the Trumpist Right as a specifically American version of fascism, and provides an extremely incisive analysis of where America stands. Excellent.

What is really going on in this society that elected Donald Trump president a second time?
I wrote about three stubborn myths about Trump’s support – and why America has experienced a de-alignment rather than a rightward realignment.

„The term "Aryan" as an ethnonym wasn't unique to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European peoples.
It comes from the PIE root *áryas, which meant
"noble", and was probably used as an autonym, in some form, by Pontic Steppe derived aristocracies all over Eurasia.
It's a controvertial subject and modern etymologists will deny it, but the Proto-Germanic
"Abala", the Irish "Éire" and the Greek "Aristos", all meaning "noble", are probably all related to the PIE "*áryas".
It was a word that referred to a single ethnic ruling caste that dominated many societies, it basically meant the same as the modern European concept of aristocracy (most European aristocratic lines descend from Germanic equestrian conquerers).

I re-launched Democracy Americana exactly one month ago, as I started my new life as a full-time writer.
Time for a quick rebrand.
No worries, nothing else changes. New look, same focus: The ongoing conflict over how much democracy, and for whom, there should be in America.

Abstract for the article: How does right-wing terrorism affect electoral support for populist radical right parties (PRRPs)? Recent research has produced contrary answers to this question. We argue that only high-intensity attacks, whose motives and targets mirror PRRPs’ nativist agenda, are likely to generate a media backlash that dampens electoral support for PRRPs. We test this argument by combining high-frequency survey and social media data with a natural and survey experimental design. We find that right-wing terror reduced support for the radical right party Alternative für Deutschland after one of the most intense nativist attacks in recent German history. An analysis of all ninety-eight fatal right-wing attacks in Germany between 1990 and 2020 supports our argument. Our findings contribute to an understanding of how political violence triggers partisan detachment and have important implications for media responsibility in the aftermath of terrorist attacks.
