Govt’s Pride in Place targets areas with economic deprivation and weaker social infrastructure. Yet, our analysis reveals 2 challenges.

We find 430 doubly disadvantaged neighbourhoods in England (home to approx 3.5 million people) are unfunded, incl many ranked as facing the greatest challenges 1/3

The major difference between me as a young adult and me as a middle-aged person? Probably replacing a hypnotised belief that possessions enhance your life with a definite belief that what truly enhances your life is good health, love, the natural world and not being constantly terrified about money.

Fast Women: Lindsey Butler’s unexpected third place Where things stand with the USATF Half Marathon Championships.

When Lindsey Butler broke open the 1500m at the USATF Indoor Champs and narrowly missed making the world championship team, it became clear that a many running fans didn't know who she was.

She's a first-year pro, does not have a sponsor, and supports herself by working as an industrial engineer.

I genuinely think schools should do basic fire safety and first aid courses as part of the curriculum. People often want to help and don’t know what to do!

A reminder that humans in cars - notably omitted from this thanks to motonormativity - kill 1.2m people every year

And given that we know that, I think it’s important to make sure that the conversation remains centred around the actual risk: that austerity and budget cuts and lack of regulation means fire safety improvements get skipped, again and again and again until this happens.

One member of the Clerk of Works’ team used to carry an angel’s foot around with her. Said foot fell from the heavens (aka ceiling) and she hoped this concrete example would demonstrate the urgency of repairs.

Didn’t help.

Agreed - the suggestion seemed to be a relaxed attitude to for prevention where an incident might be convenient.

The Glasgow Central fire seems to be very different, in a busy building and with impacts exacerbated by location :(

Two firefighters resting, sitting on the plinth of the "Citizen Firefighter" statue.

Quite an image on the BBC live page (www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cd...; no photographer credited).

Sounds as if they've saved the station and the hotel, and more importantly, without loss of life.

Citizens; heroes.

I grew up in a mansion flat - a dozen street doors each serving a dozen flats in our block alone. Mum worked for the management company in the 90s; many residents needed permission for bathroom refits - and often a rethink if they hadn't realised one corner was a boarded-over coal shaft.

I am also shocked by the lack of coverage of this fire. It’s so far only affecting the Union Street buildings, but one of those has partially collapsed, from what I can tell backwards into the station. And it’s not yet contained. This is major and more than halfway down BBC’s homepage.
