And given that we know that, I think it’s important to make sure that the conversation remains centred around the actual risk: that austerity and budget cuts and lack of regulation means fire safety improvements get skipped, again and again and again until this happens.
One member of the Clerk of Works’ team used to carry an angel’s foot around with her. Said foot fell from the heavens (aka ceiling) and she hoped this concrete example would demonstrate the urgency of repairs.

Agreed - the suggestion seemed to be a relaxed attitude to for prevention where an incident might be convenient.

I grew up in a mansion flat - a dozen street doors each serving a dozen flats in our block alone. Mum worked for the management company in the 90s; many residents needed permission for bathroom refits - and often a rethink if they hadn't realised one corner was a boarded-over coal shaft.

I am also shocked by the lack of coverage of this fire. It’s so far only affecting the Union Street buildings, but one of those has partially collapsed, from what I can tell backwards into the station. And it’s not yet contained. This is major and more than halfway down BBC’s homepage.
