Our volunteers are exactly that- people with full time jobs, trying to cram in a few volunteer hours around busy lives.
Asking them to take responsibility for the trunk road network seems quite the ask.

By-Election Result analysis: Fort William and Ardnamurchan (2025)
An easy Lib Dem victory, albeit with a weaker candidate that saw everyone else but Labour gain support, and a timely reminder of how Reform's support varies across the country.
Looks quite bad - though it wasn't the large arched part that went, seems like one of the supports on the other sections collapsed. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Very sad to hear the news that part of the Spey Viaduct on the Moray coast collapsed today, in the floods. Rode it a couple of years back while researching for #LostLanesScotland. (it didn't make it into the book in the end, but it's a lovely and much-loved piece of active travel & leisure infra)
the Scottish Government are Consulting on compulsory purchase legislation. This could see a big change for cycle routes! Bike paths typically need a small amount of land, bit across many owners.

π UK Budget Response from Transform Scotland
Transform Scotland spokesperson, Emilia Lauder, welcomes the Chancellorβs baby steps toward fairer motoring taxes. The new mileage-based charge for EVs and long-overdue changes to fuel duty finally move us closer to a 'polluter pays' system.

A map showing a new cycle route in yellow dotted line, redirecting part of NCN2 in Devon onto traffic-free paths, with the title Cycleways to nowhere
I FOI'd English councils whether they use legal land purchase powers to create traffic-free paths. Just 1% said they have successfully.
Why is something that's so common for roads almost never done for cycle routes? And what does it mean for cycling?

Sigh- Tell us you think london is the only place that exists without telling us you think London is the only place that exists.
Seems rural communities where the distances are further have been forgotten
Access to e-bikes makes traveling the longer distances in rural communities by bike accessible to more people.
Its about being able to access your local shop, school or doctor - in areas where public transport is often poor
Not everyone lives in London!

Also important to reflect that this is massively ableist. Not all cyclists can dismount, and the signs mostly block the footway anyway.
