If the stores are owned by NYC, the city could determine what types of food to offer. Food deserts are bad for health as people usually risk becoming addicted to the fast food that is available. That’s a problem in that they may not choose better food even if it is available in the future.

Yes, but you can’t hoard mail services like groceries. The idea of just giving people money to buy their own food is a good idea, though that would be a needs-based program that could leave too many people out. A system that everyone benefits from and likes would have much more staying power.

A lot of the big box stores gave up on certain locations because the arson and theft was so high that they couldn’t turn a profit. It will be interesting to see how the grocery stores manage security and loss prevention. Inventory hoarding and resales in private grocery stores are also a concern.
