In 2023, the MLB actually increased the base size from 15" to 18" which has had a huge impact. Stolen base attempts have shot up, and 30–40 steal seasons aren’t unusual anymore.
It’s part of a handful of rule tweaks MLB has made recently to speed things up and put more action back in the game.
It does extend your reach a bit—about an inch—which like you said, helps the runner. But that’s more of a bonus. The real benefit is fewer busted hands and fingers since sliding mitts became common over the past decade.
