Today the Church honors Saints Perpetua and Felicity, early Christian martyrs who gave their lives for the faith in Carthage in the year 203. Their courage and unwavering trust in God continue to inspire the faithful today.

Today we remember St Casimir. Born a Polish-Lithuanian prince in 1458, St Casimir chose a life of prayer, humility, & care for the poor over the privileges of royalty. Though he died at just 25, his witness of chastity, generosity, & deep devotion to Christ continues to inspire.

Today we remember St. Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna, martyr, and one of the great Apostolic Fathers of the early Church. A disciple of St. John the Apostle and ordained bishop of Smyrna, Polycarp stood in direct witness to the faith handed down from the Apostles. St. Polycarp, pray for us.

On this First Sunday of Lent, the Gospel leads us into the desert a place of testing, prayer, and trust in God. Like Jesus, we are invited to confront what distracts us, renew our reliance on the Father, and root ourselves in His Word.

Today we celebrate St. Peter Damian, Doctor of the Church. Living in 11th-century Italy, he called the Church to renewal during a time of corruption and moral crisis. Through prayer, penance, and fearless preaching, he urged clergy and laity alike to deeper holiness and fidelity to Christ.

This morning, the faithful gathered at Saint Patrick's Cathedral to begin the sacred season of Lent with Ash Wednesday Mass, presided over by Archbishop Hicks. In his homily, Archbishop Hicks reminded us "No matter what you do, I invite you to reflect on why you are doing it."

Today we honor the Seven Holy Founders of the Servite Order, Florentine merchants who left behind wealth and status in 13th-century Italy to dedicate their lives to prayer, penance, and devotion to Our Lady.

On this #PresidentsDay, we pray for all those who serve in public office. We ask for the Lord to grant them the gifts of wisdom, empathy and commitment to the common good.

During Black History Month, we honor Mother Mary Lange, pioneering Catholic educator and founder of the Oblate Sisters of Providence, the first religious community for women of African descent in the U.S. She also opened a school for Black children when education was denied to many.

Today the Church celebrates Saint Valentine, and Saints Cyril and Methodius witnesses to love, faith, and missionary courage.

May their witness inspire us to love boldly and share the Gospel with joy.

Today the Church honors Our Lady of Lourdes, recalling the 1858 apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Saint Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes, France. Through Bernadette, Mary called the world to prayer, repentance, and trust in God’s mercy.

Today the Church honors Saint Paul Miki & his Companions, martyrs of Japan. St. Paul Miki, a Jesuit priest, & 25 companions were executed in Nagasaki for proclaiming the Gospel. As he died on the cross, he preached forgiveness & faith in Christ, a witness of hope amid suffering.

Today the Church honors Saint Agatha. She refused to renounce her faith during a brutal persecution under the Roman Empire. She endured imprisonment and torture, remaining faithful to Christ. She is venerated as a patron saint of women and invoked against natural disasters.

From this Sunday’s Angelus Address: a reminder to pause, listen, and let the Gospel shape how we live each day. As we begin a new week, may these words guide our prayer, our choices, and our care for one another.

Today, the Church honors Saint Blaise, a physician and bishop known for healing body and soul. Martyred in 316, he remained steadfast in faith. Parishes mark this day with the Blessing of the Throats. Find a parish at archny.org.

Today the staff of the archdiocese gathered to bid farewell to a leader who has been a generous mentor a steady presence, and a source of warmth and humor. Thank you, Cardinal Dolan for your faith, care and dedication. Your impact will continue to be felt and you remain in our prayers.

Tomorrow many parishes across the archdiocese will offer the Blessing of the Throats, a tradition celebrated on the feast of Saint Blaise, asking for God’s protection from illness of the throat and from all harm.
