The Bygone Era of Supreme Court Support for Voting Rights Sixty years after upholding the Voting Rights Act, the Court has dismantled most of it.

Tomorrow marks the 61st anniversary of Bloody Sunday in Selma, Alabama. It also marks the 60th anniversary of the Supreme Court first upholding the Voting Rights Act.

We have gotten so, so far away from a Court that cares about democracy.

Bernard LaFayette, Selma voting rights organizer, has died Voting rights organizer Bernard LaFayette has died. LaFayette's son says his father died Thursday morning of a heart attack. He was 85.

Bernard LaFayette, the advance man who did the risky groundwork for the voter registration campaign in Selma, Alabama, that culminated in the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, has died.

So a lot of the people are hoping we can return to a condition where they do, but the curtain is being pulled back too far, and we're seeing that the atrocities were worse than we believed. I can't go back to the way things were, and whyinhell would anyone of us want to? (5/5)

So many people seem to be hoping for us to return to some sort of saner status quo, but the bargain struck for the American Way was always that the atrocities committed in our name were supposed to secure a certain quality of life. Now they don't. (4/ )

The plague and its aftermath weren't stupid enough for me, and now when I watch Star Wars or anything to do with LoTR, I feel Sauron and his minions are too smart, too aware of their own evil. Too many of the characters understood what the fuck they were fighting for to begin with. (3/ )

When the most recent adaptation of The Stand came out, it didn't work for me because I could look out my window and see how people were reacting to a full-on plague in real life. Nobody was siding with Flagg because they'd decided he was good, actually. Everyone believed in Captain Tripps. (2/ )

I remember being a kid and having a hard time with Sauron being unprepared for the Hobbits to destroy the Ring. Now the thing that seems so unrealistic about it was that the Dark Lord had such a solid grasp on what he was doing. (1/ )

Addendum: anyone telling you a man who got a Nazi tattoo over his Heart SHOULD be a senator, for whatever reason, may as well have a Nazi Tattoo over their heart.

I honestly suspect that they fired her because they found someone even stupider, even more ethically bankrupt, and willing to do and brag about even more despicable behavior.

I'm not kidding or being hyperbolic, but I genuinely do not understand what Noem was fired for. It sure as shit wasn't incompetence. It's hard to celebrate it when she's still walking free, and god knows they've probably replaced her with someone even fucking dumber/worse.
