My thought is that they see Newsom as a more masculine figure than Vance and in a weird twisted way, Newsom punching back at trump and showing he’s “manly”/“aggressive” is ‘alpha’ behavior by their view so it fits their narrative regardless of Newsom’s overall differing views.
