For example, imagine we're playing Dungeons & Dragons. We're 20th level, we've got a ton of cool magic items, we've defeated archliches and dragons. One player has decided to open a coffee shop, and the other players want to join in. We haven't touched the dice or brought up XP in five sessions. Someone points out that, while we're still playing the same game we were before, it no longer has much resemblance to Dungeons & Dragons as defined in the rulebooks.
