We wanted to provide a scientifically sound and well evidence-based comparison, which would put this comparison into sober perspective. We know that nowadays a lot of misinformation spreads, and if someone says, It's airborne AIDS, it can sound very scary and disorienting. And we wanted to say, people, it's not AIDS, right? But there are a lot of similarities that we have to pay attention to and that have very real consequences, in clinical practice, in public health, and in other places where a lot of people might not be aware that these parallels even exist.

Lorber: It’s really important, as you’re getting at, to name that empathy for Palestinians plays a really limited and selective role here. All humans are capable of holding a lot of cognitive dissonance. So I’m sure that someone like Marjorie Taylor Greene, not to mention a fair number of MAGA folks on the right, like us on the left, has seen images of catastrophe and genocide coming out of Gaza, and I’m sure that it’s morally repulsive to them on some level. But of course they have no sympathy for their undocumented neighbors being dragged away by ICE. We can go on and on. Most of these people have cheered on Trump’s actions in Venezuela and now, maybe, Greenland.
So it’s very selective and very opportunistic. You’ve heard Tucker Carlson just last week on his podcast say, I don’t care if Israel is an ethno-state. Israel is an ethno-state. I think Zionists should just be honest about that, and they should let us white people have an ethnostate here in America. Or I heard Nick Fuentes say, I don’t want to visit the West Bank. It’s gross.
So these people have very little real solidarity with Palestinians. It’s more about the role that the American empire should play and, in their view, how to have a strong America First nationalism in the 21st century.

‘I Was Just So Naïve’: Inside Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Break With Trump
My takeaway is these politicians know something about Trump's medical condition that we don't.
Trump is very sick, probably dying— and they're betting that he won't last out his term. They're carving out space in the post-Trump MAGA world. MTG is distancing herself from the Vance 2028 camp.

I can not stress this enough:
1) The Telegraph misrepresents our paper (“inactivate within an hour”)
2) They claim this discredits the zero-covid community
3) They ignore our much more impactful follow-up article that contradicts their claim

Unfortunately, I heard a lot of disappointment, frustration, anger, sadness, and helplessness when it came to families trying to convince school systems and doctors, to say nothing of broader society, that these symptoms were not just their child being a teenager.
That’s the trope. That’s the trope: they’re just being a teenager. And I heard that exact language pretty much from almost every family that I spoke to, which was that at some point someone said to them, They're just being a teenager.

But he was also defending Native sovereignty. So he's both this person who participates in the settler colonial enterprise very explicitly, but he is also doing so in a lot of ways to defend Native sovereignty.
And so he is, I think, this pretty unique figure who exists—he's kind of fully settler and fully Native. But the point of the book is to collapse those distinctions in a lot of ways by pushing back on the narrative that both of the tropes reinforce, that Manifest Destiny succeeded. In some ways, I argue the most dangerous myth of Manifest Destiny is that it succeeded. Because that reduces Wakara and his living descendants, of whom there are many, to the past—relegating him to the past. Instead of seeing him as part of the continual process of what is the renewal, the restoration, the change, the evolution of what is America.

Our discussion covers the thematic sweeps of @maxperrymueller.bsky.social's rich history of the American West and one of its central and oft-forgotten founders—intersecting with indigenous ecological knowledge, settler-colonialism, and Mormonism. #WakarasAmerica

Preview / You will be disappointed, and that's okay.
I speak to the enormously successful campaign of Zorhan Mamdani, his charisma, the very practical policy goals set by his run for mayor of New York City, and how you will be disappointed.
"I just want to be really transparent and honest about the fact that I, too, feel many of the feelings that people have about this, while also having this other part of myself, which I don't want to describe as pessimistic as much as just realistic."

This impulse to correct through revolutionary violent means is a pretty widespread impulse now. It's not just Luigi’s; it's also racist killers who target synagogues and churches and groups of Black people in supermarkets.
So I think Luigi is part of a larger phenomenon, and then when you think about that larger phenomenon, you think about what the social contract on violence is, and then why do so many people feel that it's okay to violate it right now. That's a deeper conversation, and it doesn't focus on personalities and causes as much necessarily and specifically.
I think the first thing that happens with a killing like this is they try to invalidate it through one thing or another—defuse it. “Invalidate” isn't the right word—defuse it, and for good reason. You don't want to trigger mass violence. Unless you're in a more explicitly revolutionary context.
I don't know. These are deep and complex issues.
