Yes! I always think they sound more like coots than frogs.

Yes it is odd. The otter also is not a Sea Otter. Is it definitely genuine and not AI?
With you on the small garden! Robin's are one of the few birds I get regularly within my garden (though plenty of others around it). I have some nice thick ivy qnd really want to encourage them to nest in it. Nesting wrens would be nice too.
Excellent! What box are you using? A standard open fronted one?
They are everywhere! They had a very good summer last year and it seems they've survived 5he wet winter well. Just soaking up the sun at the moment before they get properly active and disperse.
Hope you enjoy it!
I should say, also another that helps us. B.terrestris being the most common bumblebee in the UK's farmed landscape.
This is a great example of how ecosystems have myriad connections that that don't fit our binary ideas of 'friend or foe'. One species of insect regarded as a 'pest' supports another that people want to help in their gardens. Spray off scale insects and you could be impacting #bumblebees.

Never tried them frozen but. I find they're delicious warmed in porridge, when they go gooey and syrupy.

A gappy hedgerow in a field with rows of newly planted trees in tree guards alongside and within the gaps.
430(!) native tree whips planted today with Friends of Castle Park volunteers & CMS to restore a lapsed hedgerow at Grange Paddocks, Bishop's Stortford. Thanks to the brilliant Herts CC 'Your Trees Our Future' Project. We aspire to bigger changes for wildlife in this extensive amenity grassland.
Oh hey, it's my book! Due out next week!!
There's something to be said for a bit of time pressure from a publisher. π

There's a nice big tachinid section!
These are very aesthetically pleasing.

Hi Cath. These are Heriades truncorum, which make their nests frim pine resin. Rapidly spreading in the UK. I don't think it's possible to take the pupae out of the resin nests. Nor is it necessary. They aren't targeted by houdini fly and I've never noticed mites.
Sustainability points! Although I still like to buy new if I know it's by an author I enjoy. Feels rude not to being an author myself now.
Must try harder.
My local greenspace turned temporarily into a blue space this weekend, showing the value of floodplain grasslands at times of high rainfall. Yesterday, there were ducks swimming around the path and an egret fishing for fleeing worms. Today, it has mostly soaked away into the soil and ditches.
