A few months ago I realized my rare and valuable skill—writing code as a historian—was still valuable but no longer rare. Now I'm thinking about what it means when the technical barriers to digital history drop away.

It's important for the public to be able to reuse #RescuedData, but the context a README or similar documentation provides is necessary for understanding.

Be like Barbie. Help yourself have a great day every day, and on this #MemeMonday, remember to document your data.

The long-term concern here, to be clear, is not just about researchers, but about enclosure of the knowledge commons.

Schools are paying tech companies for tools that were trained on their own books—while tying their own hands to prevent internal development of similar tools. It's self-destructive.

I played a bit with it pmartinolli.github.io/blog/2026/pr... and I think it could be better if we can frame/influence the hypothesis. In DH text mining only 1 or 2 on 10 are interesting.

I'm constantly trying (/failing) to get this point across.

If you're a trained expert in a field, then it may be worthwhile to question the scientific consensus of your peers.

If you're not, the scientific consensus is absolutely the best you can do and it's arbitrary foolishness to disregard it.

Microsoft team creates 'revolutionary' data storage system that lasts for millennia Researchers use mini plasma explosions to encode the equivalent of two million books into a coaster-sized device. The method could preserve research data for millennia with minimal storage costs.

The system acts as near-permanent archival storage for backup of critical data.

It stores 4.8 terabytes, the equivalent of around 2 million printed books

Data survives for 10,000 years at a temperature of 290ºC and much longer at room temperature.

Strategic Bombing and the Pop History Problem Reviewing Malcom Gladwell’s “The Bomber Mafia”

I recently received “The Bomber Mafia” as a birthday gift (heh). It was bad, so bad that I believe it cannot be read as a reliable account of strategic bombing in World War II. In so many ways, it demonstrates the worst tendencies of the “pop history” genre. My review (and latest)⬇️
