A few months ago I realized my rare and valuable skill—writing code as a historian—was still valuable but no longer rare. Now I'm thinking about what it means when the technical barriers to digital history drop away.

Barbie driving down the road singing, text reads "downloading data for reuse. bottom panel: barbie and Ken screaming with text reading "there's no README"
It's important for the public to be able to reuse #RescuedData, but the context a README or similar documentation provides is necessary for understanding.

The long-term concern here, to be clear, is not just about researchers, but about enclosure of the knowledge commons.
Schools are paying tech companies for tools that were trained on their own books—while tying their own hands to prevent internal development of similar tools. It's self-destructive.
I played a bit with it pmartinolli.github.io/blog/2026/pr... and I think it could be better if we can frame/influence the hypothesis. In DH text mining only 1 or 2 on 10 are interesting.

I'll never get tired of using this example, it's just perfect.

I'm constantly trying (/failing) to get this point across.
If you're a trained expert in a field, then it may be worthwhile to question the scientific consensus of your peers.
If you're not, the scientific consensus is absolutely the best you can do and it's arbitrary foolishness to disregard it.

I recently received “The Bomber Mafia” as a birthday gift (heh). It was bad, so bad that I believe it cannot be read as a reliable account of strategic bombing in World War II. In so many ways, it demonstrates the worst tendencies of the “pop history” genre. My review (and latest)⬇️
A historical Board Game collection of around the XIXth century, photographed, sorted and classified in a database: corpus-invisu.inha.fr/s/jeux_1789-....
It was made possible by a partnership between the collector, InVisu, and INHA. May updates are coming as well!
