I do live events, tech with a stage or a mic. I'm trying to just touch on what invoicing and market rates look like, hopefully it's close enough to visual arts to resonate. (I'm also not sure if you already have the clientele and are just looking at rates or need to build up) I like to show a demo invoice with my real (higher than median) rates but also genuine discounts for things negotiated. Not everyone balks at the real price, I can show a discount if the client wants to discuss. I personally have no problem offering first-time reduced rates to advertise myself so clients understand my quality before increasing my rates in the future. Maybe that is tenable for your situation. A lot of things can be negotiated into a discount but I make it very clear discounts or price reductions do not mean you're getting the same amount of time or tools from me. Reducing my pay reduces or limits the amount of tools available to the client for the vision. I'm advertising my rates because of what I am showing/telling you I can deliver. If it's time to announce rates are increasing then it's not a gassing up; you are an artist in NYC. Market rates can be increased simply because the amount of time you've been in, tons of people have no good reason to get away with their rates, at least you give a shit lol. If the client is serious about the level of work they want from you they will pay or agree to a discount and accept simplified work from you. The market will dictate commission rates, any serious client knows this. Once you move, you're not charging "I used to live in NYC" rates. You're charging "I have X years and have worked in more than two markets" which alone is a good reason to charge more imo. Good luck with the plans:3
