Having read the article, this is my take away about what the "deal" was:
Hegseth: I'll make YOU a deal. You get to exclude LGBTQ+ kids, I get my way
Doesn't sound like much of a deal.

You get: to go to prison
How do you like that deal, Keg?
They don't have a usable, real-world framework for processing authoritarian violence against civilians, let alone children. They know what fascism is and why it's bad, but only just.
So they're processing it with the only tools they currently have.
They're responding to the violence, not literally trying to make narrative statements about the girl, nor trivialize her suffering... They're processing the trauma in their own way, and right now, since they've lead a sheltered life, fictional narratives are the only framing they have for this.
The way I took it is more "doing this to children isn't going to endear them to your cause, you're just going to have an entire generation that grows up to overthrow you and stomp everything about you into a mud hole"
And framed using an easily accessible, if nerdy framing device.
but really should it surprise anyone that a woman who sexualizes everything in the real world while writing fictional stories about children swinging phallic objects about would be in with an international pedo ring?
To be fair, as insipid as Star Wars is, it was a legitimate heart felt attempt on George Lucas's part to tell a story about how fascism comes to power and how if you're not fighting against fascists, you're enabling them.

Heck you can install Amithlon or AROS and run on way less memory, although you'll lose HTML5 support, but if we're discussing efficiency, no one needs HTML5 support.
Then switch to Amigas. They ran just fine on 2mb of memory that was slower in practice than it needed to be.

That's a bit chilling, but if true, it just says to me that it deserves to fail.
Anything that is so big that allowing it to fail would be devastating is something that deserves to have failed much sooner, and should be dismantled.
