On #WorldBookDay pick up a real book from a bookshop.
Then sit down and read for a while.
Allow a storyteller bring you into the world theyβve created.
Meet the people the writer wants you to care about.
And forget your troubles for a while, big and small.
We need stories.

Sign. Near an old railway station in Devon. "Great Western Railway NOTICE. It is forbidden for vagrants, beggars, itinerant musicians and females of doubtful reputation to enter these premises." There's what looks like a black drainpipe next to it, but this is actually the station's old 1940s "soda funnel" where country urchins from the area waiting for their fathers to return from war by rail would gather around and collectively suck a shit, early version of orangeade, made from carrots and soil, out of the bottom of it.
FFS, just go ahead and ban ALL the best people, why don't you.

Funny how folks like to say that humanities degrees are βuselessβ while the world is being actively destroyed by people not knowing about history, ethics, media literacy, or how to think critically. But sure, tell me again how STEM alone will save us.

One of the amazing speeches yesterday was by Diana, a woman who has had her GRC for 20 years. One fact she shared is that there are only 8,000 people with a GRC in the UK. All this vitriol, all the money for the court cases, space in newspapers, time in parliament, to target 8,000 people. Of course>

Photograph: Lottie, a young brown spaniel, on a path that winds through the Devon hills close to my studio.
Photograph: Lottie on lower Nattadon Hill, an old oak tree behind her.
Photograph: A smiling spaniel, in love with the world. The rain has stopped, the birds are singing, the hills are rich with delicious smells. This is canine bliss.
On a walk through the hills this morning...
"Language is like a road, it cannot be perceived all at once because it unfolds in time, whether heard or read. This narrative or temporal element has made writing and walking resemble each other." - Rebecca Solnit (from Wanderlust: A History of Walking)
