Spring training stats are fun because Trevor McDonald has posted a ludicrously high 84.6 percent ground ball rate this spring, albeit in a tiny sample of just 6 innings.
...when the need arises during the year. Though, he is not making the decision any easier on what to do with him to start the year, and I think that is what you want to see with a young pitcher.
I think the Giants would be happy if Tyler Mahle, Adrian Houser, and Landen Roupp gave them 25 starts apiece. That said, it is unlikely to expect that, so they will need to fill the gaps. Trevor McDonald has positioned himself to be one of the 1st options...
Yeah, I don't really like that role for a young pitcher because the workload for a long reliever can be unpredictable. I think what is best is to get him stretched out as a starter, whether that is in the Triple-A or the majors.
