When your Francophone friend texts “I’m bringing the pain” and you are unsure whether to be excited or terrified.
It’s sort of a nice slow-burn suspense with a great payoff at the end. Also it captures quite well the feeling of being in a place that is familiar enough, yet you are still a fish out of water.

Just to add my own review, The First Step is an incredibly engaging read. Wu Ying is a hard working protagonist who hones his cultivation through practice and luck… and a little help from his friends, who are a wild and interesting bunch of characters. (We love you, Tou He!)
