I have said before and will say again that it is such a loss that we no longer get covers of this caliber for fantasy books.

This art is by Jean-Léon Huens. These covers are for the Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander. They lit my imagination on fire as a kid.

Got way more done today than I planned. Crossing fingers these come out of the bisque looking as good as they do now.

I will say Akin Collective (where my studio is) is a unique model in Toronto, and we’re very lucky. They negotiate with landlords for access to buildings that are slated for redevelopment but currently sitting vacant, so the spaces are crappy and our presence is temporary, but it works well for me!

So for me, renting a $240/month corner in a shared studio collective is cheaper and more feasible than either taking classes once a week, or getting in with a pottery studio that has a membership model. It’s TINY but I can keep my weird hours and habits happily.

It depends so much on your circumstance! I make ceramics and I’m a renter and I simply could not materially do it in my home without hazard and making my landlord so mad. HOWEVER, having a membership at a pottery studio is like $300-500/month. And taking classes is often a similar price.

I’m with you on like 90% of these but you’re literally the first person who I’ve heard say something like this and I am RELIEVED not to be alone and HERE FOR IT.

I get why people feel impressed by AI art sometimes—cause it makes a whole thing you couldn’t do, to an arguably high level of finish. But you’re also fundamentally missing the point that the awe you normally feel in encountering someone’s art is about surprising decisions they’ve *made.*

So much artistic awe is looking at someone else’s work and thinking: “wow, I couldn’t do *this*” as you marvel at their choices. The appeal of AI art is that you get the same feeling but without the “wow.” It’s more like “I couldn’t do this, and I wouldn’t, and it doesn’t make any sense.”

I always take pictures of projects before the bisque firing but fail to post them because they’re not “done”… and then by the time everything’s finished I’m over looking at pictures of them! Like, if u want to see them, go look at them in the world, the picture isn’t the thing anymore 🙃
