Taking over Venezuela, bombing Iran, ops in Syria, etc. it all is a lot of "boom, hit you with one big action, now it's over, go along with it or else and also I won." Which is a big gamble of a strategy.

Not that it would be good for Trump and co to keep bombing/invade/go further but their foreign policy especially wrt military ops really does seem to be "well we did step 1 of 5, that means we won, don't need to do the rest of the work." Hard to annex/take over/run a country you don't really control

TL;DR it’s hard to extract, notoriously investor-endangering, isn’t needed (global crude is oversupplied to the tune of 3.3 min bpd) and isn’t easily refined (it’s too dense so always sold at a heavy discount)
