It might have helped if Democrats called them import taxes, which is what tariffs are, but there's this rule that obliges Democrats to always adopt Republican language

To be more precise: per Bloomberg... "The New York Fed study found that nearly 90% of the economic burden from tariffs in 2025 was borne by US companies and consumers."

When the NY Fed published a study finding that 90% of these import taxes are passed on to the consumer, Kevin Hassett (who undoubtedly knows better) attacked them ferociously. It is treated as an item of faith by the cult.

It would be a different world if respectable news orgs used the more revealing term "import taxes" rather than "tariffs".

The problem is that those who specialize in deflecting blame by taking offense will find a way to be offended by any term you can come up with. They tolerate exactly zero criticism.

But there is a need for a term by which to identify the group that is the source of the atrocities. Otherwise it becomes
nearly impossible to express opposition to them.
