Wer sich im Kampf gegen Diskriminierung auf “Neutralität” beruft, stellt sich auf Seiten der Diskriminierung, anstatt sie zu bekämpfen.

🛰️ TROPOMI and other, upcoming satellites offer the opportunity to check if these changes will indeed lead to the envisioned reduction in air pollution from ships.

Thanks to all co-authors for making this possible!

🛳️These findings are in line with in-situ, near-coast measurements and indicate that MARPOL ANNEX VI - which regulates ship NOx emissions - is ineffective in reducing air pollution.
In response, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has announced ammendments to the regulations just last week

In the paper we show:
1️⃣ It is possible to estimate individual ship emissions from space.
2️⃣ These emissions follow a pattern: Newer ships, which have to follow more stringent emission limits, emit more NOx
3️⃣ Emission factors are highest for ships sailing slow

Clouds darkening over NOAA research. We are slated for elimination in next years budget. Astonishing loss to the nation and the world if it happens.

NOAA Is Told to Make List of Climate-Related Grants, Setting Off Fears Staff members search for spending on “climate science,” “climate crisis” and “pollution” as one of the world’s premier climate research agencies girds for cuts.

NOAA staff members have been told to search their existing grants for terms that include “climate science,” “climate crisis,” “clean energy,” “environmental quality” and “pollution.” www.nytimes.com/2025/02/10/c... @nytimes.com

A line graph depicting the average number of days it took to install a gigawatt of solar energy capacity worldwide from 2001 to 2023. The vertical axis represents the number of days on a logarithmic scale, spanning from 1 to 1000 days. The horizontal axis indicates the years from 2001 to 2023.

In 2004, the average time was about 1 year, which is marked on the graph. A downward trend shows significant decreases in installation time over the years. By 2010, it took under 30 days, and by 2015, just over 7 days. The most notable point is in 2023, where it dropped to about 1 day on average for installation.

The data source is attributed to IRENA (2024), with calculation by Our World in Data, and the chart is identified as CC BY, indicating it is licensed for sharing and adaptation with appropriate credit.

In 2004, it took the world a year to add a gigawatt of solar power — now it takes a day

China built more solar power in the last 8 months than all the nuclear power built in the entire world in the entire history of human civilisation.

Satellite identifies ships emitting excessive nitrogen Ships at sea emit massive amounts of nitrogen, posing a global and highly complex problem. Researchers from Wageningen University & Research made a striking discovery about emissions from the latest s...

My PhD research reveals that current IMO regulations on NOx emissions are not achieving the expected reductions from newer ships. Our findings, along with insights from my colleagues, have prompted the IMO to reconsider these regulations.
