it's a recurring pattern for sure. if someone yearns to return to a time when they didn't have to pay rent and had enough free time to play video games with friends, it's not that hard to convince them that that time didn't feature immigrants or gay people or muslims or feminists...
actually come to think of it there's probably something to be said about the fact that it was an n64 and not a playstation. the n64 sold *miserably,* and while it did best in north america sony still sold twice as many playstations here.

i can't begin to guess when i last saw a playground using that equipment. it's probably been replaced by now. not my concern; i'm a grownup.
that's the common thread all of these have. it's not just "i want to be a kid again!" it's specifically "i want to play with the products from my childhood!"
i recognize that playground. not literally, of course - i've never been there - but i do recognize the equipment. the pyramidal roof in particular is distinctive. something about the shapes of the bars too.
it's all standardized. oop is yearning for a special childhood mass-produced in a factory.
